As they traversed the forest, following the narrow path northward, the trees grew sparser and the hostility in the air diminished. If it weren't for the constant presence of Goblin droppings along the way, John might have thought he had taken a wrong turn.
After some careful exploration, they finally arrived at a low-lying area, a basin within the woods that spanned roughly a thousand square meters. Sparse leather tents dotted the landscape, and a campfire crackled and hissed in the center.
A skeletal chair stood prominently in the middle of the camp, indicating that the Goblin Chief had taken all the capable Goblins with him.
"Dig around and see if there are any other spoils!"
The soldiers cautiously prodded with their spears, not out of fear of an ambush, but because they were disgusted to discover that these creatures had no qualms about relieving themselves wherever they pleased. Each step was met with various forms of filth; John and the officers were somewhat shielded by their metal boots, but many soldiers wore open-toed leather footwear, which was simply revolting to think about.
A few soldiers heard a faint whimpering sound coming from underground and carefully approached, their spears probing for the source of the noise. With one thrust, they uncovered a hole disguised by dry grass and quickly called out to John in the distance.
"Sir! We found an entrance here!"
"Everyone stay alert. Kuiradi, come with me to check it out."
Striding forward, John quickly made his way over. The entrance was small, just large enough for him to stand up straight as he directed several men holding makeshift torches to descend cautiously.
"Be careful! Don’t hit your heads."
Watching as the soldiers ventured down first, John and Kuiradi hurried to follow. The tunnel was not large nor steep; under the soldiers' guidance, they soon reached the source of the sound.
When a torch was tossed deeper into the hole, what they saw ignited a surge of anger within John. Dozens of females huddled together, accompanied by around fifty small Goblins cowering behind them.
They were referred to as females because among them were not only human women but also various female animals. It was no wonder that so many Goblins had been present; had they delayed any longer, John and Redman might have found themselves becoming Wandering Knights.
"What should we do about these little Goblins?" A soldier hesitated at the sight of the younglings, feeling reluctant to act against them since they seemed barely born.
John pressed his lips together tightly and remained silent. Slowly, he drew his well-worn short sword from his waist and moved to the front of the group. With his right hand gripping the blade firmly and his arm slightly bent, he assumed a stance ready for action.
As he brought the sword within mere inches of his face, those seemingly timid little Goblins suddenly transformed. Their grotesque faces twisted into expressions filled with ferocity and hostility. Their small eyes glared menacingly at John and those behind him as they swiftly grabbed hold of nearby female animals and ruthlessly dragged them in front of themselves as shields against potential attacks.
"Now you all should be able to see what these creatures truly are! They are despicable and loathsome monsters! In facing such enemies, you must never show any mercy!"
