The sound of urgent hoofbeats echoed through the quiet road, abruptly waking John from his near slumber. He rubbed his eyes vigorously, trying to shake off the drowsiness, and then struggled to lift his heavy eyelids to look in the direction of the noise.
Before him, a small merchant caravan was slowly emerging from a side road. The group was not large, comprising about ten people who surrounded five heavily laden carts. Each cart was stuffed to the brim, seemingly on the verge of collapsing under its own weight.
At the front of the leading cart, a flag was raised high on its yoke. Due to the distance, John could only make out a vague shape of the flag and guessed it might belong to some noble family.
"Kuiradi, go see what those folks are up to!" John shouted.
Upon receiving the command, Kuiradi swiftly slid down from a nearby cart and dashed toward the approaching merchant group like an arrow released from a bow.
At that moment, the leader of the merchant caravan, Nissan, noticed Kuiradi's approach and his expression instantly turned alert. After all, John was alone while they were numerous; if they harbored ill intentions and sought to rob him, it would be difficult for Nissan and his companions to escape misfortune.
Kuiradi stopped a few steps away from the caravan. He first lifted his visor, revealing his face, then firmly gripped the sword at his waist, adopting a posture of vigilance.
"Stop! Who are you? We are from the Knights' domain of Salty Fish Village!" Kuiradi called out loudly.
Nissan finally let out a heavy sigh of relief as his tension eased slightly. As long as they were willing to communicate, it indicated they were not there with robbery in mind.
Dismounting gracefully from his tall steed, he handed his sword to a companion named Minions. Then he slowly opened his arms as if to show he meant no harm.
"I am part of Baron Heide of Pinewood Town's procurement team; we bear no hostility!"
Hearing this declaration from behind him as John approached leisurely, he began to understand where they hailed from.
A faint smile crept onto John's lips as he spoke warmly. "I am Sir John Steve. Since we are on good terms, why not travel together? If you're heading to Salty Fish Village, you'll pass through Songlin Town anyway; it's on our way."
Upon hearing this, Nissan's face lit up with surprise as he eagerly nodded in response. "Thank you so much for your generous assistance, Sir! It is truly an honor for us to accompany such a powerful and kind group!"
For Nissan, having such a large and capable team undoubtedly increased their safety on this journey.
Thus, the original caravan continued along its intended path. However, now at the end of this long procession trailed a small tail formed by Nissan and his companions from Songlin Town's procurement team.
