John carefully folded the letter and tucked it into his pocket before raising his head to meet the gaze of the soldier standing before him. He spoke slowly, "You may go now. I will head to Binhai Town tomorrow."
He expected the soldier to take the hint and leave, but to his surprise, the man tilted his head slightly, a look of arrogance crossing his face.
With a condescending tone, the soldier replied, " Knight John, it would be best if you set off today. We wouldn’t want Lord Redman waiting on you."
Though John felt a flicker of irritation at the soldier's words, he maintained his composure, only allowing his voice to take on a sharper edge as he retorted, "Oh? Is that what Redman said?" His expression darkened, reminiscent of a stormy sky before rain.
The soldier, however, seemed oblivious to the tension in the air and continued to press on with increasing aggression. "Once upon a time, you were just a mere cook in our White Family. Now that Lord Redman has summoned you personally, instead of hurrying to obey, you choose to delay until tomorrow! Truly ignorant of your place!"
At this point, John could no longer contain himself. His right hand stealthily reached for the whip hanging nearby.
The soldier remained unaware of the impending danger and continued his tirade. "You should know your identity and status; someone like you, born a slave—"
Before he could finish, John swung the whip with sudden force. It sliced through the air like a swift serpent and coiled around the soldier's neck in an instant.
With a powerful tug of his arm, John yanked hard. A dull thud echoed as the soldier was unceremoniously pulled to the ground, landing in a heap.
Discarding the whip, John stepped forward and placed his foot heavily on the soldier's head. As he pressed down with all his weight, he gritted his teeth and shouted at the man beneath him. "I may be born of slaves, but I am not someone like you can insult!"
Drawing a short sword from his left side, John slashed across the soldier's face with precision. "Remember this scar; it was given by the great John Stephen Knight himself. It will be your lifelong honor."
He lifted his left foot and delivered a brutal kick to the soldier's stomach before ignoring him completely. He called out to others nearby. "You all take the fish to the kitchen; I intend to make Kusakusa Mushroom Dish with such large fish."
Unnoticed by anyone else, the soldier struggled to rise and clumsily mounted his horse while muttering curses under his breath. " Knight John! You were born a slave and pushed into being a knight's cook; how dare you flaunt your authority? Just wait until I speak with my lord; I want to see how you compare as an outsider."
The next day
Despite his anger towards the soldier, John still held great respect for his elder brother. Knowing how much he cared for him, John decided to pay him a visit. He prepared two carts of gifts and set off towards Binhai Town with Master and ten soldiers.
The journey was swift and uneventful, and by noon, John arrived at Binhai Town.
True to its status as a Barony, there were several times more people in town than in John's home. Even Lord Redman's estate outside of town was four or five times larger than John's own—a true representation of what a proper castle should look like.
"My dear brother John, welcome!" Redman stood at the door, arms wide open, ready to give John a big hug.
"Haha, big brother, you look even more impressive after a month apart."
The two shared a brief embrace before Redman wrapped an arm around John and led him into the dining room.
"Have a seat, John."
John wasted no time and sat down directly next to the main seat. He picked up the wine glass on the table and took a hearty drink, praising as he sipped.
