John knelt on one knee, startling Caesar Novich, who immediately rose to his feet and lifted John up, a smile never leaving his face.
"Please don't do that. If there's any fault, it's mine for hiding my identity," he laughed. "Knight John, please don't hold a grudge against me."
"How could I?" John shook his head repeatedly. "You're a prince; how could I be angry? That law is always true."
When the rich pretend to be poor, it is a test, a way to understand the people's feelings. But when the poor pretend to be rich, that is deception, and it is unforgivable.
In this world, money and power reign supreme. John Ke would not hold a grudge against someone for deceiving him; that would not be integrity, but foolishness.
Redman watched as John was helped to his seat by Caesar Novich, a strong sense of curiosity and confusion rising within him. Although he knew that Caesar Novich had been brought here personally by Marquis Duvas's lofty steward, he was completely unaware of the specific reasons behind it.
At this moment, Redman could no longer contain his inner questions and spoke up. "Your Highness, I truly do not understand why you would reveal your esteemed identity to meet with us."
Caesar Novich nodded slightly and replied solemnly, "This is indeed very important."
As he spoke, an invisible force seemed to envelop him entirely, transforming his demeanor dramatically. The seemingly ordinary figure instantly became one radiating an air of grandeur. At that moment, if one were to find words to describe his nobility, it would not be an exaggeration to pile up every term John could think of that conveys the essence of high status.
"You may have heard about the recent events in the capital," he continued.
In response to this inquiry, both John and Redman shook their heads in unison, indicating their complete ignorance. Even if they were somewhat aware of the rumors, they had to feign ignorance at this moment. After all, in such a tumultuous and complex situation, a careless word or misrepresented attitude could invite unforeseen troubles or even disaster.
"Do not hastily deny it; it is common knowledge. After my elder brother's unexpected death, the position of heir to the throne has not been settled. My second brother has rallied the eastern nobles while I have gathered support from the western nobles—Marquis Duvas being one of them. By the way, Marquis Duvas is also my uncle, so it wasn't wrong for me to say I belong to the Duvas family."
John and Redman listened with smiles as Caesar III spoke at length. They had no interest in this power struggle filled with intrigue and conflict and did not wish to get involved at all. However, now that everything had been laid bare before them, whether or not they participated was no longer up to their own desires.
Caesar III continued: "As for this challenge, its original intention was actually to train our troops while using this opportunity to weaken my second brother's influence." After saying this, he paused as if waiting for John's and Redman's response.
At this moment, John noticed that Redman was still lost in thought and had yet to come back to reality. He knew he must not let the atmosphere grow cold at this juncture; thus, after some contemplation, he cautiously followed Caesar III's lead and probed gently.
"The Third Prince's strategies are indeed admirable. I just wonder what my elder brother and I can do about it?"
Hearing this, Caesar III nodded slightly. He first wiped his mouth after eating and then slowly set down the small plate of exquisite dishes he had just picked up. His expression grew serious as he solemnly replied.
