Once locked, the box could only be opened by him or anyone who knew the correct code. If someone attempted to force it open, all the items inside would be thrown into the void and disappear without a trace.
Of course, this locking mechanism was merely an additional feature. What truly concerned him was whether this box could store objects from the real world.
Without hesitation, Yun Xiao Yi picked up a wolf carcass and tried to place it inside the box. To his surprise, it fit perfectly. However, objects in reality varied greatly in type and shape, and the storage space within the box could only accommodate items according to specific dimensions.
Typically, each storage unit had a volume of about one cubic meter. If an object exceeded this capacity, each additional cubic meter would occupy space in the next storage unit. A single wolf carcass naturally occupied less than one cubic meter, allowing multiple carcasses to share a single unit of space.
In no time at all, Yun Xiao Yi had managed to fit all the wolves and deer from the ground into the box, and astonishingly, it only occupied four storage units. Items stored within the box remained undamaged. In this place where even electricity was nonexistent—let alone high-tech products—this box could easily be regarded as a mobile cold storage unit.
Zhao Yun and Zhao Yang watched as Yun Xiao Yi methodically placed each wolf into the box, their expressions revealing that they had anticipated this outcome all along. Truly an extraordinary feat! Who could say he wasn't like a deity?
As for their opinions, Yun Xiao Yi paid them little mind. He beckoned his two brothers over to see if they could lift the box now filled with items.
Zhao Yun and Zhao Yang looked somewhat comical as they exerted themselves. However, in reality, lifting the box was incredibly easy. Clearly, the weight of the items inside did not add to the box itself. This was a clever design. If the weight had truly accumulated, it would have been manageable with fewer items; but if more were added, no one would be able to lift it.
With all the items properly secured, the three of them set off. Yun Xiao Yi gazed at the open area before him, now stripped bare except for a ground littered with wooden stakes, and felt a surge of emotion. This was the very place where he first crossed into this world; perhaps he should erect a monument here to commemorate it? Doing so would not only mark the location but also serve as a reference for the future, especially since this area was rich in coal and iron ore resources that would surely be valuable later on.
Moreover, in these towering mountains, finding this spot again would not be easy; thus, making a mark was indeed necessary. Incidentally, this action would also help him clear out a large number of fossilized rocks packed in his backpack, making it a win-win situation.
With this thought in mind, Yun Xiao Yi called out to Zhao Yun and Zhao Yang, who were preparing to leave with the box, telling them to hold on for a moment. He then quickly ran back to the entrance of the mine he had previously excavated. He first blocked the entrance with granite and then began stacking Granite Blocks underground in groups of three, building a total of several blocks high.
When he stood at the highest point and looked around, the entire majestic mountain range lay before him. He then took two torches from his backpack and placed them atop the granite monument. The flames illuminated the surroundings while adding a unique spectacle to the night.
How impressive! Yun Xiao Yi silently praised himself, imagining that such a magnificent sight would have been regarded as a marvel even during the late Eastern Han period. After completing all his tasks, he removed one of the outermost granite blocks so he could easily descend from the monument back to the ground.
Seeing the astonished expressions on Zhao Yun and Zhao Yang's faces, Yun Xiao Yi couldn't help but smile with pride. He recalled a saying: "Returning home in wealth is like wearing gold and silver while walking in darkness." The feeling of being able to showcase this strength in front of others was truly exhilarating.
This land lay deep within the eastern slope of the Taihang Mountains.
Following Zhao Yun and Zhao Yang, they traversed several mountains before finally reaching a familiar road. Along the way, Yun Xiao Yi had intended to ask Zhao Yun why they had ventured so deep into the mountains for hunting. However, as he observed the surroundings, he found his answer. With each step outward, the changes in the vegetation on the slopes became increasingly apparent: the trees grew sparser and their colors faded to a dull yellow.
As they approached the outskirts of the Taihang Mountains, it became difficult to spot towering trees; even small thickets were hard to find. Only sparse weeds dotted the ground, surrounded by vast patches of yellow earth. They encountered a few people along the way, each with a gaunt appearance that seemed to scream hunger from their faces. If it weren't for knowing that they had come for sustenance, one might think they were merely providing extra food for the beasts.
This scene weighed heavily on Yun Xiao Yi's heart. He suddenly understood what it meant for ordinary people to experience a devastating famine, as briefly mentioned in ancient literature. After leaving the Taihang Mountains, the desolation appeared even more severe. As far as the eye could see, what should have been lush green fields had turned into a sea of yellow, with cracks sprawling across the surface of the land. The once-mighty rivers now flowed like mere trickles, lacking any semblance of strength.
Farmers made multiple trips to fetch water from the river to irrigate their crops, but this could not compensate for the water needed by the wilting fields.
