Now, all her hard work and efforts could not even guarantee her the most basic dignity? In Li County, she felt uncomfortable. She handed the water cup to him. After despair, Lin Xiao surprisingly calmed down. She turned around, took the cup, and stuffed the room card from her pocket into Li Hao's hand.

Thinking this way made Lin Xiao feel much better. She stayed in Benz Hall until the banquet was over before leaving with everyone else.

She also couldn’t leave; how could a secretary leave work early? Together with driver Xiao Wang, she helped the drunk Li Hao back to his hotel room.
Back in her own room, Lin Xiao took off her coat and crawled directly into bed. She didn’t want to cry, but her heart felt too wronged, and tears flowed uncontrollably.
Lin Xiao felt as if there was a wall in her heart, pressing against her throat with a suffocating sensation, as if a fish had left the water and was dying.
Struggling to sit up, she opened her mouth wide to take in more oxygen. As she gasped for air, cries erupted from her chest; she couldn’t suppress herself any longer and sobbed loudly. The long-held pressure was released at that moment.
She cried like a child—so helpless and so desperate—her tears soaked the blanket she clutched in her arms. Only at this moment did she dare to be her true self.
For nearly two hours, she had worked desperately and overtime without complaint—first to solidify her role as a secretary, then out of admiration for Li Hao’s dedication and determination, and later because she wanted to excel even more and earn his greater recognition.
But now, Lin Xiao felt like a joke.
At nine o'clock the next day, Lin Xiao had already completed the check-out procedures and was waiting for Li Hao in the lobby.
When Li Hao saw Lin Xiao, he couldn’t help but glance at her a couple of times; as usual, his psychological resilience was quite good.
After crying last night until two in the morning, Lin Xiao finally realized how bad it was when she saw her swollen eyes. She wasn’t afraid of Li Hao seeing her red eyes; however, they had to return to the county in daylight when many people would be around at the County Government.
She requested two bottles of chilled mineral water from the hotel and applied them on her eyes throughout the night until they reduced swelling.
On Yu Rao Road, sitting in the passenger seat, Lin Xiao didn’t say a word. In the back seat, Li Hao also remained silent.
Driver Xiao Wang sensed that something was off today; yesterday on their way back from the hotel, the County Chief had been in high spirits discussing poverty alleviation funds while Director Lin seemed fine too, even joking with the county head.
Did all that money just fly away after last night’s dinner?
During the two-hour drive, Lin Xiao received several phone calls mostly asking when the county head would return.
Except for Luo Qianwei and a few county leaders’ calls which she answered, she hung up on everyone else; after crying so fiercely yesterday, her throat was hoarse.
Lin Xiao naturally carried a sense of responsibility and felt somewhat anxious about how last night’s situation would be handled by the county head regarding poverty alleviation funds—after all, it concerned the lives of thousands of people in Yu Rao.
Li Hao was not completely awake from his hangover. Yesterday, he had indulged in a strong-flavored liquor, as he needed to maintain his composure for the meeting. After all, the leaders from the province and city were present, and he had probably consumed over a pound of white liquor before switching to red wine.
Lin Xiao, noticing his frequent drinking habits, had taken it upon herself to carry Hangover Pills with her, believing it was her duty to alleviate the leader's troubles. Normally, she wouldn’t hesitate to offer them to him without waiting for him to ask. However, today, just before getting into the car, she hesitated. Why should she buy him imported Hangover Pills when she couldn’t even justify buying snacks for herself?
That thought lingered for only a moment. Realizing he had a meeting in the afternoon, she reluctantly handed him a pack of pills.
After taking the medicine, Li Hao soon felt much better and not long after, he began to snore lightly.
