Lin Xiao looked at the "Civil Servant Promotion Assessment Form" on her computer, joy filling her heart. After all, this was a recognition of her efforts.
"A Xiao, I got promoted!" Lin Xiao snapped a picture of the top half of the assessment form and sent it to her younger brother, adding a celebratory fireworks image for good measure.
Lin Xiao received a congratulatory message in return, followed by, "Sister, how about I start working? There's a game company in Shenzhen offering a high salary, and I'm quite satisfied with it."
Her excitement instantly faded. She quickly typed back, "Lin Xiao, we've made it through the toughest times. If we could escape our past difficulties, it's because we received higher education. You need to study; even if you take my place, you must continue your education."
As she read his last message, her eyes welled up with tears. He was the only man in the family but lived the least pressured life.
God is fair; just like Lin Xiao and her brother, they had both effortlessly scored high enough to enter Xiangtian Province's only Xiangtian University and were separately offered graduate research opportunities. However, Lin Xiao had given up her chance for graduate studies to participate in that year's Provincial Committee Selection.
At that time, Lin Xiao was in her senior year of high school, and the family simply couldn't afford two college students. Although Lin Xiao hardly took any money from home after starting university and had received scholarships in high school, their mother’s farming income barely covered living expenses.
Lin Xiao gazed at the game software she had programmed on her computer and dialed a number. "Chen Zong, do you still need my Xianmo Game code?"
Before leaving, Lin Xiao made sure to meet with Li Hui and Shang Wenjuan. No matter what Li Hui had done in the past, she had never harmed herself.
No matter how late it was, as long as she went to them, they would leave a nightlight on in the hallway for her tired heart to feel a sense of belonging at home.
"Lin Xiao, congratulations!" Li Hui and Shang Wenjuan raised their glasses.
"I'm really happy for you that you can go to the Provincial Government," Li Hui said with tears in her eyes, her emotions running high.
"Exactly! From now on, you'll be a provincial leader," Shang Wenjuan laughed before lowering her voice. "Sister Hui and I were worried you might miss your boss."
Perhaps they all knew this gathering could be their last; there was an added sense of calmness among them.
"I told you before that there’s nothing to worry about; it’s just your wild imaginations," Lin Xiao replied with an unconcerned smile.
"In fact, the county head thinks highly of you; everyone knows you're leaving and even recommended you for a deputy position," Shang Wenjuan couldn't help but exclaim.
"It wasn't me who brought him up; you see how eager you are to hear news about him while relying on me," Lin Xiao said quickly changing the subject as she didn't want to discuss Li Hao.
The three women drank together with a sense of carefree abandon. As they continued drinking, Shang Wenjuan hugged Lin Xiao and cried, reluctant to let go.
None of them mentioned Li Hui's situation; after Miao Shizhang's incident, Lin Xiao felt somewhat complicated about it all.
In this world, women have it much harder than men; why should we hold such high standards for someone like Li Hui who is merely drifting through fate?
During the public announcement period, Lin Xiao's work gradually became intertwined with Meng Kai's. She no longer visited the county chief's office; even on the first floor, she rarely encountered Li Hao.
As the announcement period came to an end, Lin Xiao pondered deeply and ultimately decided to have a private conversation with Li Hao. Setting aside her feelings for Miao Shizhang, she recognized that Li Hao was an exceptionally capable leader. Upon reflection, he had never forced her into anything; the choice had always been hers.
