Dinner was arranged in a standard room on the first floor of the hotel. As it was a banquet hosted by Secretary Li, the hotel’s signature dishes were served one after another. Xiao Tian had a few drinks and began to compliment Li Hao.
Everyone in the Organization Department knew Li Hao's background like the back of their hands. Since Lin Xiao established her image of being a teetotaler in the Organization Department, no one dared to invite her for drinks anymore. The people accompanying her from the county mostly recognized Lin Xiao, but no one dared to force her to drink; they treated her with utmost respect, after all, she was like a little monk emerging from a grand temple.
It was time for Li Hao to toast everyone individually. He approached Lin Xiao with a glass in hand and said, “Director Lin, welcome back home!”
Lin Xiao felt her face flush from his serious demeanor. She stood up, turned around to toast him, lowering her glass as she said, “Li Secretary, I toast to you.”
She never expected Li Hao would do something like this; he poured the liquor from his flask into her glass. Since she was facing away from the table, no one noticed his actions.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were here?” Li Hao asked, feigning concern for his subordinate like a normal leader would.
Lin Xiao shot him a glance but replied honestly, “I know you’re busy, Li Secretary, and I didn’t want to disturb you.”
She didn’t drink from that glass; although she could hold her liquor, it would make her face turn red. Li Hao returned to his seat with the flask.
In such occasions, Li Hao usually made the rounds just to toast and then left it to the standing committee members to entertain guests. However, he remained seated until dinner was finished and even escorted them to the elevator.
Inside the elevator, Xiao Tian was still caught up in the atmosphere of the dinner table. “Lin, do you see why Secretary Li could become County Party Secretary at such a young age? He values organizational work. Our organizational work is the foundation.”
As the elevator doors opened, Xiao Tian was still immersed in his thoughts.
As soon as Lin Xiao reached her room, she received a call from Li Hao. “Come out; I’m waiting for you in the underground garage.”
Lin Xiao changed into sportswear before heading down. When she got off the elevator, Li Hao honked from his car as she approached.
“You drive; I’ve been drinking,” he said as he settled into the passenger seat.
“No way! If Director Xiao finds out, it won’t be good,” Lin Xiao immediately retorted. “I’m here for work, not on a date.”
“Then where are we going?” Li Hao asked with some dissatisfaction.
Lin Xiao drove towards Emerald Lake, an artificial lake that had been expanded since Li Hao arrived. Surrounded by lush green bamboo on the mountainside, the shadows of the bamboo danced on the water’s surface, making it appear emerald green—hence its name.
The evening road around the lake was dappled with light and shadow as the wind rustled through the bamboo, creating a soothing sound. It was indeed one of nature's finest moments in April.
Lin Xiao parked her car by Emerald Beach, an artificial sandy area that attracted many families during holidays for recreation.
Lin Xiao hadn't been here in a while, and there were some new buildings around.
After parking the car, Li Hao got out as well. The dim light cast shadows on Lin Xiao's face, creating a somewhat mysterious atmosphere. The two of them quietly walked along the beach, feeling the cool evening breeze and the varying textures of the sand beneath their feet, which brought back a sense of childlike wonder.
Li Hao took her hand firmly and pulled her closer, slowly leaning in to kiss her. Perhaps it was the effect of the alcohol, but his kiss was a bit more passionate than usual. As an adult man, he didn’t have an overwhelming desire, but with his girlfriend soft in his embrace, he felt stirred. His cold hand slipped under Lin Xiao's clothing.
Caught up in the kiss, Lin Xiao was startled by the sudden chill of his hand and instinctively pushed Li Hao away, following it up with a sharp slap. The crisp sound of her palm meeting his skin echoed against the gentle lapping of the lake's waves, leaving both of them in stunned silence.
Lin Xiao stood there dazed, unsure whether she should apologize or if he should be the one to say sorry. Li Hao hadn’t expected her to slap him so hard; he stumbled back a couple of steps, the effects of the alcohol completely wearing off.
What just happened?
For a brief moment, Lin Xiao felt as if Ji Quan You's lecherous hands were on her again, and a wave of disgust and fear washed over her.
"Are you afraid of me?" Li Hao thought incredulously as he noticed Lin Xiao trembling.
Slowly, she crouched down, hugging her knees tightly with her head bowed, shaking it gently.
Li Hao felt a mix of emotions—he couldn't help but find it absurd. They had been dating for over four months; he had merely touched her and now felt like a criminal.
After about an hour passed, Lin Xiao's legs grew numb from squatting, and when she finally stood up, she wobbled slightly.
