Li Hao's injury was indeed serious, and he considered himself lucky. Just as the car sped past, a landslide occurred; had it been ten seconds later, he would have been done for.
"Are you leaving?" he asked. His mother and Xiao Meng were due to arrive at nine o'clock. Li Hao could tell that Lin Xiaojing was ready to go; visiting hours were about to start, and many people would be coming.
"Yeah, I have to go to work," Lin Xiao replied, searching for a plausible excuse.
"I told my mom that my girlfriend is coming today. You’ve met Xiao Meng, and I’ll let her know you’re here, so you don’t need to worry about them."
Li Hao thought it best to be open about his relationship. After all, they had met so many times; those women could be quite bothersome. Lin Xiao was different—she was not only obedient but also smart.
While he appreciated her obedience, he did not like foolishness. Most importantly, he simply didn’t have the energy to chase after other women.
The first time Li Hao agreed to keep their relationship a secret was because he wasn’t sure if it would last with Lin Xiao. However, after this injury, he realized that Lin Xiao was exactly what he wanted.
When Lin Xiao learned that his mother knew about her, she felt a chill run down her spine as she recalled the way his mother had looked at them yesterday.
"You can go to the front desk to get a visiting card; after that, you can come up directly," Li Hao said, not insisting that Lin Xiao stay. He worried that his mother’s arrival might make Lin Xiao uncomfortable.
His mother had a calm demeanor and was indifferent to everyone. Given Lin Xiao's sensitivity, she would surely mind.
Li Hao had no idea that his mother was in the living room observing what kind of person his future daughter-in-law was.
As Lin Xiao stepped out of the hospital room, she saw Li Mu sitting on the sofa, silently watching her leave.
"Hello, Professor Sun. I came to visit Li Shuji," Lin Xiao said with a slight bow. "I have to go to work now. Goodbye, Professor Sun."
Throughout the encounter, Li Mu scrutinized Lin Xiao from head to toe. She looked well-proportioned and seemed like an honest girl, though perhaps a bit timid; she managed to remain composed in front of him.
Li Hao could hear Lin Xiao's voice from the hospital room and knew his mother had returned to check on her.
"This is your little girlfriend?" Professor Sun seemed somewhat satisfied. "Why don’t you tell me more about her situation?"
Li Hao briefly introduced Lin Xiao: she graduated from Xiangtian University and now worked at the Provincial Organization Department; she had a younger brother and came from a single-parent family.
"All that family background is secondary; we don’t need any support from such families. What matters is that her character is upright and that she treats you well. Don’t let anyone buy you off with small favors in the future," Professor Sun advised earnestly.
As Professor Sun listened to her son’s description, she felt a vague sense of unease; he sounded too objective, not like a man in love at all.
However, she believed this girl must have her own merits.
Li Hao thought there was no doubt about Lin Xiao’s qualities; he knew his mother wouldn’t find anything wrong with her.
Meng Kai listened as Li Hao mentioned letting Lin Xiao come in directly next time and almost choked on his words in surprise.
Li Hao thought that it would be better not to compare with Lin Xiao. Meng Kai never expected such explosive gossip; he wanted to share it with others but lacked the courage. He wondered when they had started dating. When Lin Xiao came yesterday, why hadn’t he noticed and let him in directly?
That evening, when Lin Xiao came over again, he brought back the fruit basket from yesterday. Sun Professor was not around, but Xiao Meng was there.
“Lin Ren, you’re too polite. The Secretary said you could just come in,” Meng Kai said warmly.
“Xiao Meng, you don’t need to use honorifics; I’m not even two years older than you,” Lin Xiao replied, feeling a bit strange being addressed so formally.
Meng Kai smiled and didn’t respond, tactfully closing the hospital room door behind him as he stepped outside.
Li Hao reached out to pull her closer. Having learned from yesterday’s lesson, Lin Xiao leaned in towards his face, allowing him to kiss her.
“Are you feeling better today?” Lin Xiao asked, feeling uncomfortable from the kiss; his stubble was a bit prickly, and she didn’t understand why he liked it.
“Much better,” Li Hao replied, finding kissing quite interesting and feeling satisfied. He planned to go back home in a couple of days; resting in the hospital was inconvenient for many things.
“Is Meng Kai going to come over?”
“He has to; there are many things to handle in the county, and I can’t leave him. You should move over too; it’ll save you from running back and forth at night, and you can stay in your room.”
Lin Xiao thought that this way, he wouldn’t be able to do anything else either, but she wasn’t particularly worried about that.
Li Hao’s home was near the Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government, close to the hospital and Xiangtian University where Lin Xiao worked. Although he was recuperating at home, he still had plenty of work to do.
Every day after work, Lin Xiao would go to the hospital to take care of Li Hao. With Meng Kai around, she would keep him company for a while before heading back alone to Li Hao’s place at ten in the evening.
When Lin Xiao finished work at Lido Water View, Xiao Meng was busy unpacking boxes. The takeout bags were from Zhuye Pavilion, a well-known high-end private restaurant in the area.
Xiao Meng helped Li Hao sit at the dining table while Lin Xiao quickly fetched chopsticks and food containers for him.
“I didn’t know what you liked to eat, so I let Xiao Meng choose some dishes,” she explained as she looked at the colorful and fragrant spread of four dishes and a soup, along with a genuine crab roe bun for each person.
I’m not picky; I can eat anything. Lin Xiao thought to himself, even if I were picky, I would still love the dishes from Zhuye Pavilion.
Xiao Meng sat awkwardly to the side, unsure of how to pick up her chopsticks. Why were these two so polite while dating?
After finishing the meal, Xiao Meng took it upon herself to clear the table.
Lin Xiao helped Li Hao lie down on the bed.
Lying on the bed, Li Hao used his uninjured hand to gently pull Lin Xiao over to sit beside him.
"Stay with me for a while."
