That night, Li Hao had just returned to the hotel when his old phone rang.
"Brother, have you run into Bai Xue? I just received a message from her. Back in the day, when they were together, it was so beautiful; I was a witness. What are you going to do?"
To be honest, I don’t know. Li Hao felt somewhat deflated. He would rather believe that Bai Xue had truly betrayed him than feel this overwhelming guilt he was experiencing now.
That girl Bai Xue really makes one feel for her. You think about it—being sick abroad, how is she managing? Deep down, he knew that his heart leaned towards Bai Xue; she truly loved him and chose not to tell him.
These words pierced Li Hao's heart like needles. After five years of being in a relationship since graduate school, learning the truth left him unsure of how to face Bai Xue. The hatred he once felt for her was now replaced with guilt.
Li Hao lay in bed for a long time unable to sleep, staring at the message from Lin Xiao, feeling at a loss for words—was it guilt or self-blame?
The next morning at eight o'clock, Li Hao's phone rang.
"Li Hao, did you drink too much again last night?" Lin Xiao's tone carried a mix of dissatisfaction and concern. "Drinking every day will ruin your health."
She always called at eight, knowing it wouldn’t disturb his rest or work.
"Yeah, I fell asleep right after getting home." Li Hao didn’t know how to explain the situation.
"Make sure to drink more water today. I'm hanging up now." Lin Xiao said before ending the call.
Looking at the call interface from Lin Xiao, Li Hao felt even worse. How could he tell her about this? What would she think?
The following day, as planned, Li Hao took Mike and Bai Xue along with others for an inspection tour around Yu Rao.
Yu Rao was mountainous, with many attractions built into the hills.
Bai Xue climbed slowly, and Li Hao watched her with some concern, signaling Zhu Man to help her.
When choosing spots later on, they tried to avoid mountain paths as much as possible, opting for cable cars or bamboo rafts on the water instead.
They planned to visit four scenic areas in a day but only managed two.
The inspection team’s Mike flew back home on the second day while Bai Xue stayed behind with two others to work on a project proposal, interspersed with visits to various attractions.
Meng Kai had been feeling depressed over the past half month; this foreign investor would find excuses every few days for Secretary to accompany her on site visits.
It didn’t feel like an inspection; it felt more like she was dragging Secretary along for a romantic getaway—whispering sweet nothings and reminiscing about the past.
Even from a distance, one could sense her insincerity.
"Wang Shifu," Meng Kai asked, "how long has it been since Secretary returned to the provincial capital?" Since not every weekend was spent with his classmate, he had no choice but to ask Xiao Wang.
It had been almost two months since the New Year, and Meng Kai realized with a jolt that it had been a while since Secretary Lin had returned home. How often did she go back? Once every week or two, but this time it felt unusually long. They had been quite busy lately. Xiao Wang usually drove, and Bai Xue had a car, so Lin Xiao rarely took Xiao Wang's vehicle.
Meng Kai couldn't help but worry about Lin Xiao; it wasn't just that she wasn't afraid of thieves, but rather that she was concerned about attracting unwanted attention. After all, Lin Xiao had helped him a lot when she was in the provincial capital.
"Director Lin, you've been busy lately?" Meng Kai mustered the courage to call her.
"Yes, quite busy. Is there something you need?" Lin Xiao replied while typing away at her keyboard, revising report materials.
"I noticed you haven't visited Secretary recently, so I thought I'd check in. Are you coming this weekend?" Meng Kai continued to ask.
"Did he give you a hard time?" Lin Xiao chuckled at Meng Kai's cautious tone. "I can't this weekend; I have graduate classes. If I miss any more classes, I'll have to extend my graduation."
Lin Xiao exchanged a few brief words with Meng Kai before hanging up. She needed to work on her thesis proposal over the weekend and would have to put in extra hours to get it done.
Later that night, Lin Xiao sent a WeChat message to Li Hao asking if he was back yet. It had been a long time since she heard from him, and it was only when she woke up in the middle of the night that she received his reply: "Get some good rest."
