On the second day of the Lunar New Year, Li Hao and the others returned to the provincial city.
This time, Lin Xiao felt completely disheartened by her mother. She had always cared for Lin Xiao as an older sister, and she didn’t mind that. However, over the past two years, it seemed her mother had begun to treat her like she was about to get married, constantly watching over her and taking advantage of her. This home no longer held any warmth for her.

This year, the Spring Festival was late; it would end around mid-month, and there was a major conference at the beginning of the month that Li Hao needed to attend in Beijing. During this time, Lin Xiao's days became even busier because the Organization Minister would be attending various meetings at the start of the year. They were responsible for drafting speeches and promotional materials while also coordinating with other departments to arrange the Minister's schedule for the year.
In her spare time, Lin Xiao continued revising her graduation thesis. The two could only chat during video calls at night.
One day, Li Hao missed Lin Xiao so much that he resorted to coaxing and pretending to be pitiful in order to persuade her to be honest with him. On the first day, Lin Xiao refused. On the second day, she refused again. By the third day, Li Hao decided to take a more direct approach; unable to resist his charm, Lin Xiao agreed to a virtual stroll through the clouds with him.
From then on, Li Hao insisted on having deep video conversations with her every few days. By mid-month, however, when it was time for Li Hao's return to Yurou County, Lin Xiao could no longer reach him.
She asked Meng Kai about it, but he hesitated in his response. With her years of experience, she sensed that something had happened to Li Hao. Yet she felt powerless; there was no way for her to inquire further or intervene due to organizational rules.
The most important thing was that in such situations, the family would be notified, but the girlfriend would not. Lin Xiao did not have Professor Sun's phone number, nor could she possibly have Li Boshan's contact information. When she searched for news about Li Boshan online, she found that he had not been seen for days. This realization left Lin Xiao feeling shrouded in darkness.

According to protocol, Ge Ting from the Disciplinary Committee accompanied Lin Xiao. Upon arriving at the Provincial Discipline Inspection Commission's inquiry room, Ge Ting completed the necessary handover procedures before leaving.
Lin Xiao submitted her phone and bag and passed through the security check before entering the inquiry room. Inside, there was a man in his thirties and a woman in her forties who invited her to sit across from them.
In the meeting room, when Lin Xiao arrived, there were two men and one woman waiting for her. "Lin Xiao, I am Wang Dawei from the Provincial Discipline Inspection Commission, and this is my colleague Zhang Ru," said the man in his thirties, speaking in a gentle tone. "Please don't be nervous; we are here to understand some situations."
Wang Dawei observed Lin Xiao as she nodded and then read aloud the rules and requirements for the inquiry. "Did you understand everything clearly?" he asked.
"Yes," she replied.
"Do you know Li Hao?" Wang Dawei asked as his first question.
"I do. He was my supervisor before and is now my fiancé," Lin Xiao answered truthfully.
Following Wang Dawei's request, Lin Xiao recounted her relationship with Li Hao according to a timeline.
