The guard shoved Gu Qianxian roughly, causing her to stumble and crash into the Cold Palace.
Once adorned in splendid garments, she was now stripped of them and dressed in coarse cloth. Her pale arms and calves bore shocking bruises.
The door of the Cold Palace creaked shut with a resounding "creak," isolating her from the outside world and extinguishing all her hopes.
This place was dilapidated, cold, and damp, with a nauseating smell of mildew permeating the air.
Gu Qianxian glanced around; cobwebs hung from the broken window frames, thick dust accumulated in the corners, and decaying leaves littered the ground.
Her heart sank little by little.
Leaning against the cold wall, she slowly sank to the floor, her body trembling uncontrollably.
"Gu Qianxian, look at you now!" A sharp voice shattered the silence of the Cold Palace.
Si Tu Rong strode in with a group of maidens, her demeanor arrogant and triumphant.
A cruel smirk adorned her face, reflecting the satisfaction of a victor.
"Look at how pitiful you are now," Si Tu Rong said as she approached Gu Qianxian, looking down on her from above.
"The prince will soon forget about you, you worthless wretch!" Each of Si Tu Rong's words struck Gu Qianxian's heart like a sharp knife.
Gu Qianxian lifted her head to meet Si Tu Rong's twisted face, filled with anger and resentment.
"You think you've won?" Though her voice was weak, it carried an indomitable strength.
Si Tu Rong let out a cold laugh and said, "Isn't it true? You are nothing more than a discarded plaything, while I am the true mistress of this estate."
"The prince's heart will always belong to me alone." Gu Qianxian looked at her, a hint of mockery flashing in her eyes.
"Do you really think the prince loves you?" Gu Qianxian's words caused Si Tu Rong's expression to change slightly.
"What do you mean?" Si Tu Rong's voice turned somewhat sharp.
"He only loves power," Gu Qianxian said softly, but her words were clear enough for Si Tu Rong to hear.
Si Tu Rong's face instantly turned pale. The thing she feared most was being right about what Gu Qianxian had just said.
"You’re talking nonsense!" Si Tu Rong screamed, lunging at Gu Qianxian. "I’ll tear your mouth apart!"
Gu Qianxian did not dodge; she merely looked coldly at Si Tu Rong.
Si Tu Rong's maids quickly stepped forward to restrain her.
"Calm down, my lady," an old matron advised. "Why bother with someone who is about to die?" Si Tu Rong took a deep breath, suppressing the anger within her.
"You are right," Si Tu Rong said with a cold smile. "Why should I argue with someone who is about to die?" "Bring it on," she commanded her maids behind her, "take good care of Young Lady Gu."
"Yes, my lady," the maids replied, a sinister smile appearing on their faces.
Si Tu Rong cast a triumphant glance at Gu Qianxian before turning to leave. The maids surrounded Gu Qianxian and began to beat her mercilessly.
Gu Qianxian curled up on the ground, silently enduring it all.
An old woman walked in. She had been specifically arranged by Si Tu Rong to "take care of" Gu Qianxian.
The old woman's face wore a sarcastic smile. "Young Lady Gu," she said, "you have suffered."
Gu Qianxian raised her head and looked at the old woman's hypocritical face, feeling a wave of disgust wash over her.
"Get out," Gu Qianxian said coldly.
The old woman's expression changed slightly, but she quickly regained her smile.
"Young Lady Gu, please don't be angry," the old woman said. "I am here on the order of the Princess to bring you your meal." With that, she pulled out a food box from behind her and opened the lid.
A foul odor wafted out. Inside the box were some leftover scraps of food that had already gone bad and moldy.
"Young Lady Gu, do try it," the old woman said. "This is a delicacy from the royal residence." Gu Qianxian looked at the bowl of rotten food and felt a wave of nausea.
"Take it away," Gu Qianxian said coldly. The old woman's expression turned somewhat unpleasant.
"Young Lady Gu, don't be ungrateful," the old woman said. "This is a gift from the Princess." She added, "If you refuse to eat, it would be disobeying an imperial decree."
Gu Qianxian looked at her, a flicker of disdain in her eyes. "I won't eat it; what can you do about it?" Although her voice was weak, it carried a sense of determination.
The old woman's expression grew even darker.
"Young Lady Gu, don’t make me force you," the old woman warned. "I am not someone to be trifled with."
Gu Qianxian ignored her and closed her eyes.
The old matron's eyes flashed with a hint of malice.
She approached Gu Qianxian, reaching out her hand, intending to choke her by the neck.
At that moment, Gu Qianxian suddenly opened her eyes.
Her gaze was cold and sharp, like two gleaming knives.
The old matron was startled by her stare, instinctively retracting her hand.
"You..." The old matron's voice trembled slightly.
Gu Qianxian remained silent, merely looking at her with a chilling intensity. The old matron felt a shiver run down her spine and dared not act out again.
"Young Lady Gu, please rest well," the old matron said, "I shall take my leave." With that, she hurriedly departed.
Gu Qianxian watched the old matron's retreating figure. She curled up on the worn bed, covered with a thin blanket, yet sleep eluded her.
Thoughts of Xiao Yaohan flooded her mind—his gentle gaze, his warm embrace.
Tears silently streamed down Gu Qianxian's cheeks.
