The second year of university had begun.
On the long bus ride back to school, Hu Ruoyun shared the rumors about Yao Wei with Mao Na. This left Mao Na speechless for a while, and after a moment, she finally managed to say, "What about Li Shengnan? She's about to have a baby!"
Hu Ruoyun replied, "Right now, there's no good solution. One hope is that Yao Wei realizes his mistakes—though from what we can see, that's unlikely. On the other hand, given Li Shengnan's situation, it's best not to provoke her at this time..."
Mao Na fell silent again, and after a long pause, she said angrily, "That pretty boy has no good intentions! What makes him think he's better than Li Shengnan?"
When the bus reached Jiangcheng, Mao Na still looked troubled. Hu Ruoyun saw her off at the bus stop and asked dreamily, "You’re not like Yao Wei too, are you?"
Hu Ruoyun pushed her onto the bus and followed her on. They got off at the entrance of Jiangbei Postal and Telecommunications School, where he held her hand as they got off together. He walked her all the way to the dormitory building before saying, "You go on up; I’ll head back! As I said before, 'You Never Leave, I Will Never Abandon!'"
Mao Na felt relieved and turned around with a light step as she headed upstairs.
Back at Jiangbei University, the other four were already in their dormitory. Cui Shuigen and Liu Jiawang had noticeably tanned skin from working in the fields at home.
The five of them went to the cafeteria for lunch, where Cui Shuigen couldn't hide his excitement: "Feng Yun came home with me for a visit; my parents were so happy..."
In the afternoon, everyone prepared for their classes starting the next day.
That evening, Cui Shuigen eagerly dragged Hu Ruoyun to the playground for a walk and detailed his trip home with Feng Yun: "Brother San, you've helped me a lot this past year; I've paid back my loans, and my family isn't under pressure because of my schooling anymore... Feng Yun came back with me for a visit. At first, I was worried she might think our family was poor, but she quietly told me that her family is even worse off than mine.
She’s the eldest child; her parents farm less than three acres of land. Due to various factors, they live in a deeply impoverished county; her village is in one of the most remote mountainous areas. Since she started university, her family's situation has become even tighter; both of her younger brothers wear tattered clothes!
She thanked me for bringing her along to work part-time and said she's looking forward to graduating quickly so she can find a job and change her family's circumstances."
Perhaps this is the most realistic wish of every child coming from a poor family.
On the first Sunday after classes resumed, Hu Ruoyun called Lai Wen's office from the dormitory to say that he would take Mao Na out to dinner with Lai Wen the next day. Lai Wen was busy borrowing an interview machine and introducing her husband, making things much easier for Annan's side regarding some difficulties they faced.
At the request of County Chief Mao and others, along with Hu Ruoyun's personal friendship, he brought Lai Wen a bunch of goodies: vacuum-packed Daokou Roast Chicken, Lao Miao Beef, Eternity Mutton Hot Pot, and even a high-quality ice wine for her husband.
Lai Wen declined: "I can't do it right now; an old classmate from abroad just returned, so I need to spend time with her!"
But Hu Ruoyun couldn’t wait; although the items were vacuum-packed, it was hot outside and he worried they might spoil if left too long. He insisted, "Sister Lai, just give me ten minutes; I just want to see you!"
After thinking it over for a moment, Lai Wen said, "How about this? Tonight my husband and I are taking my classmate out to dinner at Xi Wangfu Holiday Hotel. You and Mao Na can join us; we have a private room on the second floor."
Now Hu Ruoyun felt it was inappropriate; it was their family gathering—what business did he have crashing it? But since it had already been mentioned, he could only agree while deciding in his heart that he would leave the items at the hotel front desk for them to pick up without going upstairs himself with Mao Na.
