On that day, she made a face at the entrance of Qi Chong's house while holding a bamboo basket. "I'm going to pick mushrooms! Come chase me!"
After saying that, she ran off, looking as if to say, "What can you do about it?" Qi Chong was quite annoyed. His two younger brothers would never dare to take Yu Chunmiao up the mountain without his approval. It seemed that Yu Chunmiao had successfully broken through their defenses.
For several days, Yu Chunmiao did not enter Qi Chong's house. He had Qi Rong help him with meals and medicine instead.
That day, Qi Chong was lying in bed out of boredom when his younger brother walked in. With a disappointed expression, he took the medicine bowl and asked, "Where's your sister-in-law?"
He thought Yu Chunmiao might be upset because of their trip to the mountain. In reality, his two younger brothers were quite protective and would rather pick fewer mushrooms than take her deep into the mountains.
Qi Rong said mysteriously, "Sister-in-law has been looking troubled lately. Last night when I got up, I saw her crying alone in the kitchen."
Qi Chong's heart sank. He swallowed the medicine in one gulp and tried to get out of bed.
"You can't get out of bed! Do you want to go for a small or big relief? I'm your second brother!" Qi Rong blocked him with his small body, but he was easily brushed aside by Qi Chong.
Seeing he couldn't stop him, Qi Rong shouted outside, "Second Brother! Come quick! Big Brother wants to get out of bed!"
Qi Chong slapped him on the head. "Who do you think you are?"
Qi Yuan rushed in upon hearing the commotion. "What's wrong? Do you need a chamber pot?"
Qi Chong rubbed his forehead helplessly. "Can't I just want to get out of bed for something else? It's only a few days short of a month; I just want to stretch my legs."
"No way!" Qi Yuan successfully pushed him back down. "Not even for a day! What if you end up with lasting health issues? That could be a lifetime problem. Just tell me what you need—books or hunting gear; I can bring you whatever you want."
Qi Chong was extremely irritated, furrowing his brow so tightly that he could squash a mosquito.
Qi Rong's eyes lit up as he said, "I know! Big Brother must be missing Sister-in-law! I'll go get her right now!"
As soon as he entered the room, Big Brother asked about Sister-in-law, and upon hearing she was crying, he hurriedly wanted to get out of bed. He felt certain his guess was right.
At that moment, Yu Chunmiao was in the backyard trimming red mushroom roots. After half an hour of work, she had only managed to cut a dozen mushrooms; most of the time was spent daydreaming.
A few days ago, she dreamt that her grandmother was gravely ill and called her name before passing away. She was by her grandmother's side, but no matter how she called out, her grandmother couldn't hear or see her.
Her grandmother had been seventy years old before she passed away and would send her two thousand yuan every month from her pension. But now that she was gone, what would happen to Yu Chunmiao?
A seventy-year-old woman without any family or financial support would have to hear that her only granddaughter had died before her. Just thinking about it made Yu Chunmiao's heart ache.
Since she started kindergarten, she had always been by her grandmother's side. If it weren't for her grandmother's love and care, what difference would there be between her and an orphan?
Qi Rong rushed to the backyard, snatching the scissors from her hand and pulling her along. "Sister-in-law, you need to take a look! Big Brother insists on getting out of bed."
Yu Chunmiao was mechanically dragged into Qi Chong's room and pushed in front of his bed. "What's wrong?" she asked, blinking her big eyes at him.
Qi Chong's gaze swept over her face, reading a hint of sadness in her eyes. "What’s wrong? Qi Rong said you were secretly crying at night. Why? Is something bothering you?"
Qi Yuan, unaware of the situation, felt a wave of anxiety wash over him. This Sister-in-law had always been cheerful since he met her; he had never seen her troubled before.
"Sister-in-law, if there’s something you want to say, you can’t keep it bottled up. That’s why Mother is not well," Qi Rong added, puffing out his chest as he stepped closer to her.
Yu Chunmiao looked around at her three brothers, a wave of emotion swelling in her chest that reached her nose and ultimately turned into tears streaming down her face.
Qi Chong pulled her closer and sat her down, raising his hand to wipe her tears away. "Is there something you can’t talk about?" he asked gently.
