The skilled movements astonished everyone present, and even Qi Chong, who had witnessed it more than a dozen times, couldn't help but marvel. Especially after the bandages were removed, they were neatly rolled up in her hand, unlike the usual messy piles they were accustomed to seeing.
"Wow," exclaimed the apprentice who had just been chatting with Yu Chunmiao, "this skill is something even Doctor Yu doesn't possess!"
After he spoke, he covered his mouth and looked at his master, only to see Doctor Yu nodding while stroking his beard, not rebuking the apprentice's disrespectful words.
Yu Chunmiao shrugged her shoulders, feeling a bit embarrassed by the attention she was receiving. Doctor Yu laughed heartily and said, "Ah, if you were a man, I would want to take you as my disciple."
In this era, female doctors were considered unclean if they touched a man's body. Moreover, men looked down on female physicians; no matter how skilled they were, they could barely earn a living.
"I'm not cut out for this," Yu Chunmiao replied. "I can help out a bit, but I could never remember all those meridians and bones for a lifetime."
An apprentice peeled back the Bone Paste from Qi Chong's leg. Doctor Yu adjusted the sleeves of his robe and placed one hand on the injured area, saying, "Bear with it."
Qi Chong nodded as Doctor Yu carefully examined the bones. The pain surged through him, causing his veins to bulge.
Seeing him grit his teeth in agony made Chen Ruolan tear up again.
Yu Chunmiao hurried over and pulled her aside. "Mother, don’t look! If you keep watching like this, Qi Chong won't dare to cry out in pain."
Fearing that her son was suffering too much, Chen Ruolan wiped her tears and turned away.
Yu Chunmiao returned to Qi Chong's side, took his hand, and wiped the sweat from his forehead.
With his other hand gripping the armrest of the chair tightly, Qi Chong's fingertips turned pale. Yet the hand that Yu Chunmiao held was completely devoid of strength.
Finally, Doctor Yu released his grip. Qi Chong exhaled a long breath and said, "It doesn't hurt as much as last time."
Doctor Yu nodded in satisfaction. "Good. The splint can come off now; you can stop taking the herbal medicine too. Just apply the Bone Paste and wrap it up again. Change the dressing every three days."
Chen Ruolan bent down and asked him, "When can Qi Chong leave?"
"There's no rush," Doctor Yu replied. "In another half month, he can start trying to put weight on that injured leg. Just remember to use crutches—don't put too much pressure on it or for too long. As for how much pressure... just enough so it doesn't hurt."
He actually wanted to say 'a little pain,' but considering Qi Chong's tolerance for pain, he opted for 'doesn't hurt' instead.
Chen Ruolan was overjoyed and expressed her gratitude profusely.
At that moment, Yu Chunmiao yawned at an inappropriate time; her previously rosy face suddenly turned pale.
Doctor Yu noticed and said, "Qi Niangzi, you should go to the clinic for a pulse check; you seem to have an underlying ailment."
The once cheerful family suddenly felt a knot tighten in their throats. Yu Chunmiao was especially worried that just as her life was beginning to improve, she would fall into another abyss. Why was her fate so cruel?
Qi Chong immediately stood up and asked, "What? A hidden illness? Doctor Yu, are you sure?"
Doctor Yu softened his tone and replied, "Don't worry, it's not anything serious. However, Qi Niangzi's condition is not my specialty, so I won't elaborate. Just take the medicine and head to the medical hall. Go to Renji Hall and find Sun Daifu; a pulse check will reveal everything."
After saying this, Doctor Yu left, and his apprentice brought over some Bone Paste for Qi Chong to administer.
Anxiously, Qi Chong pulled Yu Chunmiao closer and asked, "Do you feel any discomfort?"
Yu Chunmiao hung her head and shook it. "I don’t know, Qi Chong. Am I going to die soon? The scariest part is not feeling sick at all; by the time you realize something is wrong, it might be too late."
Chen Ruolan spat three times and said, "Doctor Yu already said it's nothing serious. We'll go see a doctor shortly."
The apprentice noticed Yu Chunmiao's distress and mustered the courage to approach her. Covering his mouth, he leaned in and whispered in her ear, "Qi Niangzi probably doesn’t have anything serious because Sun Daifu at Renji Hall specializes in treating women’s ailments and is particularly good at regulating their health."
Yu Chunmiao's eyes widened in surprise as she asked, "Really? Is it that simple?"
The apprentice nodded and added, "Doctor Yu probably didn’t want to say it outright, but since you don’t have any children, you should definitely go see him."
