As they traveled halfway, Yu Chunmiao felt an urgent need. She urged Qi Chong, "Hurry up! Stop at that Tea House ahead; I need to relieve myself."
Qi Chong cracked the whip on the Black Donkey's rear, and the Donkey Cart suddenly sped up.
In less than a minute, they reached a Tea House. Before the Donkey Cart had even come to a stop, Yu Chunmiao was already preparing to jump out.
She rushed into the Tea House and asked the attendant where the restroom was located. The restroom was in the back courtyard, but there were people inside, so she had no choice but to hold her stomach and wait outside.
It felt like an eternity, though only a minute had passed.
Finally, the door swung open, and she hurried inside, colliding with someone coming out. It seemed something had fallen to the ground.
"Sorry, sorry!" Yu Chunmiao quickly apologized without even looking at the person before darting into the restroom.
Finally feeling relieved, she took her time adjusting her clothes.
As she stepped out of the courtyard, she noticed a large, burly man with a bearded face standing there with his arms crossed.
Perhaps he was waiting for his turn in the restroom. Yu Chunmiao tried to walk past him, but the Bearded Man reached out and blocked her path.
Yu Chunmiao looked up at him; he was staring right back at her.
"Are you trying to run after ruining my property?"
Yu Chunmiao caught a whiff of alcohol and noticed that the Bearded Man was holding a broken gourd from which the smell emanated.
She pointed at the broken gourd and asked, "Are you saying I broke this wine gourd just now?"
"What else could it be?" the Bearded Man questioned.
In her haste earlier, she hadn’t paid attention and had no choice but to admit it.
"I'm sorry; I acted rashly. How much do you want for this gourd? I'll pay you."
"One tael!" The Bearded Man held up a finger, looking serious and not like someone trying to extort money.
"What?!" Yu Chunmiao took a step back, already preparing to flee. "Are you trying to scam me?"
The Bearded Man stepped closer and said, "Yeah? What are you going to do about it?"
As Yu Chunmiao continued to back away, she protested, "What kind of wine costs one tael? Is it made of gold? It smells just like ordinary Sorghum brew."
The Bearded Man didn’t let up; as she retreated, he advanced, his cow-like eyes glinting with amusement as he watched her.
As the conversation came to an end, Yu Chunmiao found herself pressed against the wall, with nowhere to retreat. The Bearded Man stood close, just a foot away, and she could feel his breath on her skin.
Run, what are you waiting for?
Yu Chunmiao feigned submission, saying, "Big Brother, whatever you say goes. I can give you whatever you want, just stay away from me."
The Bearded Man remained unmoved as Yu Chunmiao reached into her crossbody bag, pretending to pull out money. But she had no money; it was all with Qi Chong.
Taking advantage of the moment when the Bearded Man's gaze shifted to her hand, Yu Chunmiao quickly darted to the side.
A thick arm blocked her path.
Was she being wall-banged?
Yu Chunmiao silently chanted Qi Chong's name in her mind. Where are you? Your wife hasn’t come home in so long; why aren’t you here?
She didn’t dare shout out loud, fearing that the Bearded Man might knock her out with a single punch.
"Big Brother, what do you want?"
The Bearded Man leaned in closer, almost touching her nose with his own.
Yu Chunmiao covered her mouth and nose, terrified to the point of tears.
"Little girl, where is your home? Do you have parents there? I want to come and propose to you, to take you as my wife."
The sincerity in the Bearded Man's voice and the gentleness in his eyes made it seem as if he were truly proposing.
Yu Chunmiao felt a fleeting thrill for half a second before it vanished. Maintaining her pose of covering her mouth, she replied, "Big Brother, you're too late. I’m already married; my husband is outside."
The Bearded Man squinted slightly and scrutinized Yu Chunmiao once more.
"Impossible!" he declared with certainty.
