Days passed quietly for more than ten days, and the village chief did not come looking for the Qi Family. What had happened was of no interest to them; their only goal was to keep their heads down and focus on getting rich.
After everything that had transpired, Chen Ruolan had come to terms with it all. The past was behind her, and her children were now capable of supporting themselves. She only wished for good health so she could witness the birth of her grandchildren, ensuring that her husband’s love for her was not in vain. With this thought, she felt her body growing stronger.
Qian Duo Duo remained as obedient as ever and was now nearly five months old. Although she was in an awkward stage, her wolfdog traits were beginning to show, exuding a certain fierceness amidst the awkwardness.
Qi Chong's legs were getting better every day, and he had started practicing with the Shi Suo. He would stretch out his long arms, lifting a Shi Suo weighing fifty pounds in each hand. Sometimes it was manageable when he wore a sleeveless shirt, but when he went shirtless, it was quite something to behold. With broad shoulders and a narrow waist, sweat glistened on his sun-kissed muscles, leaving Yu Chunmiao feeling flustered.
Unaware of his charm, Qi Chong only knew that his wife clung to him more at night. If it weren't for the summer heat, she would want to be attached to him at all times, often tracing circles on his skin with her fingers.
Today was Yu Chunmiao's follow-up appointment. She hurriedly took the donkey cart to the clinic early in the morning. Arriving early meant there were not many people waiting, and soon it was her turn with Qi Chong by her side.
As soon as they entered the consultation room, Sun Daifu stroked his beard and smiled with satisfaction. "Not bad," he said, noticing how much healthier she looked. He reached out to take her pulse. "Continue taking the Zi Xue Wan; you will get better and better."
Yu Chunmiao had learned to be clever; as soon as Sun Daifu began writing out the prescription for Zi Shi, she dashed out of the consultation room.
Qi Chong held onto the prescription list, instinctively waiting for Sun Daifu's final instructions. Seeing him standing there without moving for a while, Sun Daifu teased him, "What’s wrong? Do you want me to check your pulse too? I can treat men's ailments as well; have a seat."
Qi Chong shook his head, unsure how to ask what he wanted to know. Finally, he stammered out, "I’m not sick."
Sun Daifu understood what he was waiting for; such an earnest man was rare indeed. He couldn't help but chuckle. "You silly boy! Do you think I won’t give you advice unless you ask?"
Qi Chong's handsome face turned beet red at that moment, but he still managed to mumble out his question: "Then... should I be gentler?"
Sun Daifu also felt himself blush from suppressing laughter. "What? If I don’t tell you to be gentle, will you use too much force?"
Qi Chong shook his head firmly. "That can’t happen."
When Yu Chunmiao saw her husband emerge with a flushed face, she felt even more certain that her decision to leave early had been the right one. The two of them went to the medicine cabinet to buy medicine, while the attendant diligently counted out pills using bamboo tweezers according to the prescription list.
With the medicine in hand, the two of them were met with a venomous glare.
A woman, around fifteen or sixteen years old, with a slender frame and a slightly protruding belly, stood opposite them, her eyes fixed on Yu Chunmiao as if she wanted to devour her whole.
Yu Chunmiao whispered to Qi Chong, "That's my wicked sister-in-law, Kong Dongmei."
Qi Chong remained unfazed as usual; if others didn’t provoke him first, he acted as if nothing had happened. He took Yu Chunmiao's hand and attempted to walk away.
"Stop right there!" Kong Dongmei's voice was sharp and arrogant as she blocked their path. "You idiot, the injury on your brother's head was caused by you, wasn't it?"
"It was me," Qi Chong replied coolly.
Kong Dongmei glanced at him and saw a tall man with an angry expression, fiercely protecting Yu Chunmiao. The more she thought about it, the angrier she became. How could her husband inherit the bad habits of that gambling father who had gone missing, spending every day indulging in petty gambling?
"Pay up!" Kong Dongmei extended her hand. "He spent two silver coins on treatment; you owe me that."
