When Qi Rong returned, Qi Yuan was busy tying up two men with a vine. Seeing his brother come back, he hurriedly said, "Grab a couple of your stinky socks and use them to gag these two."
Qi Rong rummaged through the bundles in the carriage, not noticing the sack inside. He found only one pair of socks, so without saying a word, he took off the pair he was wearing and used them to gag the two criminals.
After securing the men, Qi Yuan dragged them to the back of the carriage and then went to untie the sack. As he loosened the top, a beautiful woman with fair skin appeared. She had her eyes closed and her body was limp, clearly unconscious.
In the sweltering heat, she had been sweating profusely inside the sack, and her hair was in disarray. Qi Yuan paused for a moment, then continued to untie it; leaving her like that would surely suffocate her. He reached under her arms to help lift her while Qi Rong pulled down the sack.
Once the sack was removed, they discovered that the woman was dressed in armor. Her wrists and ankles were bound, and her dark red satin skirt only reached her knees. Without the sack covering her, she gasped for air but remained unconscious.
Noticing a slight flush on her face, Qi Yuan worried that she might have fallen ill from being confined. "Qi Rong, check if her forehead is hot."
"Okay," Qi Rong replied as he reached out to feel her forehead. After checking both his palm and back of his hand, he said, "Brother, I can't tell."
Qi Yuan opened his hand and said, "If you can't tell, why did you take so long?" He turned to the unconscious woman and said apologetically, "Miss, I'm sorry for touching you like this. If you're sick, I need to take you to a doctor."
With that, he pressed his fingers against her forehead; it felt hot—she might be suffering from heatstroke. "Qi Rong, fan her with my straw hat; we need to get to town."
He pointed at the two men who had been knocked out and asked, "What about them?"
"Send them to the authorities!"
Upon arriving at Ji Tang Medical Clinic, they laid the woman down in an examination room. Qi Yuan handed his brother a piece of silver and instructed him to keep an eye on her while he took the two criminals to the government office.
The town's government office was small but had both a town chief and yard officer present. However, this case was serious enough that they needed to send the offenders to the county jail; since the woman was a witness, she would have to go as well.
Qi Yuan said to the Constable, "The woman is still unconscious and is being treated at the medical clinic."
The Constable thought for a moment and replied, "Did you not encounter her on your way to pick up your brother? Why don’t you bring her along when you take your brother home? We can send her to the county together."
It seemed that the Yamen did not want to take responsibility for the woman, so this was the only option left.
At the medical clinic, after being given a bowl of medicine, the woman coughed twice and slowly regained consciousness.
Qi Rong was very happy to see her awake. "Sister, you're awake!"
The woman glanced at Qi Rong and then around the room, appearing to relax a bit. "Did you save me?" she asked.
Qi Rong chuckled and said, "I didn’t do anything special; it was my brother who saved you. He defeated the bad guys and took them to the authorities."
Just then, Qi Yuan walked in. Qi Rong pointed at him and said, "This is my brother."
The woman propped herself up and said, "Thank you. I don’t have any money right now, but when I get home, I will definitely have my brother come to thank you."
Qi Yuan asked her, "What is your name? The people at the Yamen said you needed to go..."
Before he could finish his sentence, the woman fainted again.
The doctor checked her pulse and said that she had been struck on the head, causing a disruption in her blood flow. She just needed to rest for a night at home to recover.
Qi Yuan asked the doctor, "Can we keep her here at the clinic? I’ll pay for it."
The doctor replied, "She needs someone to stay with her."
Qi Yuan scratched his head in frustration; neither of the brothers could stay with her.
