The phone in the duty room rang suddenly, its sharp sound cutting through the air. A teammate answered, "Hello, we’re on our way." It turned out that a concerned citizen had called for help. In a nearby area, a child was reported to be drowning. Rescue efforts had been underway for two days, involving other teams, but to no avail. Now, they were reaching out to us for assistance.
Upon receiving the mission, we sprang into action, gathering our team with urgency. Everyone was alert and hurried, quickly arriving at the designated meeting point. We checked and packed various essential equipment, such as professional life jackets, ropes, and communication devices, ensuring everything was in order. Soon after, we boarded our vehicles and sped towards the location.
Inside the vehicle, the atmosphere was tense yet organized. The team leader provided a detailed briefing on the mission's background and objectives, assigning tasks based on each member's strengths and experience. Everyone listened attentively, committing their responsibilities and key points of the mission to memory.
Before long, we arrived at the scene. Stepping out of the vehicle, we were taken aback by what we saw: a large crowd had gathered, their faces filled with anxiety and concern. Other rescue teams were already present, busily engaged in their tasks.
After organizing our gear briefly, Old Wang led me swiftly towards the family area among the crowd. Through patient inquiries and communication, we gradually gathered more information about the situation at hand. This understanding was crucial for formulating a more precise and effective rescue plan.
Simultaneously, to ensure that the rescue operation could proceed smoothly and maintain safety at the scene, the police quickly set up a perimeter. Officers were serious as they repeatedly urged bystanders to step back beyond the line to avoid interfering with rescue efforts or causing any accidents.
Seeing this situation unfold, we wasted no time unloading the Assault Boat from our vehicle and quickly installing necessary equipment like the outboard motor. Everything was prepared efficiently without any mistakes. After confirming that all checks were clear, we followed our plan and steered the Assault Boat resolutely toward the area in urgent need of water rescue.
On that vast river, our boat moved steadily like a determined guardian as we conducted a thorough patrol of the suspected target area. At the same time, various professional rescue equipment and recovery tools were rapidly deployed. Everyone was filled with anxious hope, eager to find the missing child as quickly as possible. However, time ticked away; hours passed quietly. Despite our best efforts and measures taken, results were disappointing. Faced with this situation, we made a decisive call to temporarily abandon underwater searches and regroup on land to adjust our strategy and redeploy tasks.
Through our previous efforts and analysis of the scene's environment, we were able to identify a more precise search area. Thus, experienced divers joined this tense rescue operation. Clad in thick diving gear like brave deep-sea explorers, they plunged into the water and ventured into its depths.
Every minute felt painfully long as we waited; yet ultimately, perseverance paid off! After several hours of arduous underwater work came an exhilarating announcement: they had found the child! The poor child had become trapped in a narrow crevice between rocks underwater. This explained why conventional recovery methods had failed so miserably. However, for divers familiar with underwater environments and skilled in their craft, solving this problem was relatively straightforward.
As the child was safely brought to the surface, everyone felt a collective sigh of relief wash over them. We quickly handed over subsequent responsibilities to waiting police personnel for further processing. At the same time, we made sure to comfort the anxious family members of the child by detailing every aspect of the rescue process in hopes of providing them some solace.
That was my first encounter with a drowning victim; it left me profoundly shaken. Although I had mentally prepared myself before the mission began, reality hit harder than I expected. Gazing at the covered body left me stunned for a long while as I pondered what that child's last moments must have been like—surely filled with helplessness—and recalled happier times from school days.
Nearby, wails from family members echoed throughout the scene. Due to waiting for forensic processing next steps, they were unable to approach; though I felt sympathy for them, I also felt powerless. With a sigh of resignation, I silently bowed to honor the child before turning away.
Days later, after handling all necessary arrangements following their loss, the child's family visited us with heartfelt gratitude and presented us with a vibrant banner as a token of appreciation.
Though it was simply a few words of thanks expressed verbally, it contained boundless gratitude and respect. For me personally, this banner held significant meaning as it marked my first recognition since joining this rescue team! While it symbolized collective honor for our group, it undoubtedly also represented my individual hard work and relentless effort.
Much time has passed since that harrowing mission; however, whenever I recall those events, each member of our team still feels echoes of that experience in their hearts. The painful scenes remain too heavy for us to discuss lightly.
Yet from another perspective, this mission became invaluable experience for us all. Through firsthand involvement in such challenging rescue operations, we not only enhanced our coping abilities and psychological resilience but also further refined our already proficient rescue skills.
Since then, I have quietly resolved to dedicate myself fully to studying and mastering various advanced rescue techniques and knowledge. In facing merciless natural disasters or human tragedies, I aim to leverage my increasingly refined professional expertise to step forward in critical moments and do everything possible to save every precious life—never betraying this noble mission or failing those who place their hopes in us.
