It was a winter afternoon, and the sunlight filtered through the clouds, casting a gentle warmth. Suddenly, the tranquility of the atmosphere was shattered by a series of urgent phone rings from the team. The on-duty personnel quickly answered the call, and a worried woman's voice came through the receiver. After a brief exchange, we learned that this woman was from out of town and was desperately seeking our help.
As it turned out, with the Spring Festival approaching, her elderly mother had been taken in by her sister for a few days. However, that very evening, her sister left the elderly woman alone at home while she went out for social engagements. When her sister returned late at night after the gathering, she was shocked to find that her mother was missing. Even more concerning was that they could not reach her through her mobile phone or any other means of communication.
The woman's tone on the phone was filled with anxiety and helplessness; she mentioned that she had already purchased a ticket for that day and was rushing back home, hoping we could help find her missing mother as soon as possible. After hearing her plea for help, everyone in the team felt a tightening in their hearts, fully aware that time was of the essence in locating the elderly woman. Thus began a tense and challenging search operation.
This was our first outdoor rescue mission. In fact, we had not encountered many such tasks before; most of our previous missions were focused on security or water rescues. Fortunately, we had just completed a training exercise that prepared us for this moment.
The assembly point for this operation was quite unusual—it was set at the bustling airport. The woman seeking help had already decisively purchased a ticket to return home before contacting us. So after hanging up the phone, she hurried to catch the earliest flight available. Considering this would allow us to communicate with her more conveniently, we decided without hesitation to wait for her at the airport.
Finally, when we spotted her figure in the crowd, she appeared anxious and emotionally charged. Before we could react, she rushed towards us like a gust of wind, gripping our arms tightly and expressing her gratitude repeatedly. Had it not been for the presence of others around us at that moment, given the intensity of her emotions, she might have already been in tears.
Once she regained some composure, we quickly engaged in a brief communication with her. Through sharing information and conducting a preliminary analysis of the situation together, we swiftly drafted an action plan. Due to my familiarity with jungle environments and my practical skills honed during my time in service, I was appointed as the commander for this operation.
When we arrived at the area indicated by surveillance as the last known location of the elderly woman, everyone moved swiftly and solemnly into action. After an intense yet orderly discussion, we decided to divide into several small teams, each consisting of four to six members. This would ensure both efficiency in our search efforts and thorough coverage of all directions and corners.
Once divided into teams, everyone began to focus on various key factors such as the complex environment and potential paths forward. Some groups meticulously searched along main roads for any hidden clues; others ventured deep into the woods, leaving no seemingly insignificant detail overlooked; while additional teams kept an eye on easily overlooked secluded corners or abandoned buildings.
Meanwhile, drones hovered above without pause, diligently carrying out reconnaissance missions. They flew like tireless birds over the area, transmitting real-time footage back to command through high-definition cameras, providing us with invaluable guidance.
The teams maintained close communication with one another and regrouped at predetermined points at regular intervals to share discoveries and progress updates while adjusting search strategies based on newly acquired intelligence. Thus commenced an all-encompassing and multi-layered carpet search operation.
Despite appearing well-planned on paper, numerous challenges emerged during execution. First and foremost, the area that needed searching was vast and sprawling; such an enormous scope made carrying out our mission exceptionally difficult. As each team progressed along their designated routes, they often realized they had left parts of their search areas uncovered shortly after starting out. Moreover, some teams faced impassable road conditions. Some groups encountered numerous confusing intersections that left them bewildered and indecisive; others faced only one lonely road stretching ahead—straight but increasingly remote—eventually leading them away from their intended search area altogether. In summary, various problems arose in quick succession like a tidal wave, making it seem nearly impossible to resolve them all comprehensively.
