The fight against the pandemic has now entered a critical phase. Thanks to everyone's relentless efforts and the continuous input of resources, we have significantly replenished our supplies, and the number of participants is steadily increasing and stabilizing. In light of this, we are able to embark on a series of important long-term initiatives.
Those teammates who can consistently participate in missions have been accurately assigned to various communities and streets within our jurisdiction according to a unified plan. They will take root here, fully dedicating themselves to frontline pandemic control efforts, becoming a strong line of defense for the health and safety of residents. Meanwhile, those with more flexible schedules have taken on another important responsibility, executing comprehensive disinfection tasks in specific areas.
I am fortunate to lead a team of brave and fearless members tasked with conducting long-term pandemic control actions in one of the communities. Our specific work encompasses multiple aspects: on one hand, we must carry out regular and routine environmental disinfection throughout the community to ensure that the virus has no hiding place; on the other hand, we are responsible for the critical task of collecting nucleic acid samples to promptly identify potential infections and take appropriate measures for control. Additionally, we need to maintain a presence around designated quarantine areas to prevent any possible violations that could lead to the spread of the virus. Of course, besides these core tasks, there are many other trivial but essential matters waiting for us to address, such as assisting in the distribution of essential supplies.
When we finally arrived at the community, the street officials warmly welcomed us and quickly set about resolving our accommodation issues. After some consideration, they arranged two places for us: one was a party meeting room, and the other was an empty room that had been sitting unused.
We decided to utilize the empty room for storing important equipment and supplies, while the party meeting room was converted into a temporary dormitory. Given the special circumstances we were in, conditions were indeed quite harsh, but everyone had little complaint and made do with makeshift bedding to rest.
Every morning, as the first rays of sunlight touched the earth, we began our busy day. Our primary task was to conduct thorough disinfection and nucleic acid sampling across various buildings. Although this work was arduous, everyone understood its importance and focused intently on completing each task meticulously.
However, compared to our daytime duties, the night shifts truly felt like a test of endurance. As night fell and temperatures plummeted, we each could only bring a small stool to sit in front of our assigned buildings. Surrounded by darkness and silence, apart from the occasional sound of wind, there was hardly any other noise. We had to endure several hours in this state without being able to do anything else. The feeling was both cold and boring, with time seeming to drag on endlessly. Nevertheless, we remained vigilant at our posts, silently guarding the safety and health of this community's residents.
The early stages of our deployment were indeed extremely challenging. Each task took about six hours or so to complete, during which we frequently climbed stairs—a great test of both physical strength and endurance. At first, everyone thought that perhaps after staying here for a week or so, we would be able to complete our mission and return home. However, reality delivered a heavy blow; our initial assumptions were completely misguided! Due to an unexpected surge in cases, what was supposed to be a brief deployment was extended to nearly a month.
To ensure our families' health and safety while also facilitating more efficient operations, we ultimately decided to settle entirely within this small community for both living and working. Thus, every morning when the first ray of sunlight shone into the community, we were already fully engaged in our busy tasks; as night fell and lights came on, we would drag our exhausted bodies back to our temporary residence, quickly wash up before collapsing into bed, ready to face another day’s challenges. Day after day passed; although our bodies endured immense pressure, the belief in protecting our home and overcoming the pandemic kept us going.
As we reached the middle and later stages of our deployment, circumstances began to change gradually. At that time, wave after wave of caring and responsible volunteers joined us at their posts. As a result, our daily tasks became considerably lighter compared to before.
Typically, after completing necessary disinfection tasks each morning, most urgent matters for that day would already be handled. However, occasionally we would receive additional assignments such as receiving various vegetables and other essential supplies arriving daily.
When this moment arrived, the scene became bustling with activity! Since the outbreak began, outside had turned eerily quiet; most people stayed indoors with hardly anyone seen on the streets. Yet at this moment, it was surprising to see so many figures busily moving about.
Faced with numerous supplies of various kinds, we needed to coordinate and distribute them methodically. To this end, each point dispatched dedicated personnel for assistance with transportation. Some were strong enough to carry heavy bags of rice; others moved swiftly arranging boxes of fresh vegetables neatly. Each time supplies arrived, dozens participated in this lively labor.
These precious supplies were all aimed at ensuring residents’ basic living needs within the street. According to regulations, each household would receive two fresh cabbages, three pounds of heavy potatoes along with other corresponding food items. After all, during this special period when families could not freely go out shopping for groceries, it was only through meticulous government planning that every family could maintain normal living conditions.
As night fell and time quietly passed by, everyone no longer adhered strictly to schedules as before. At this moment, everyone was absorbed in their mobile devices. After an unknown period—perhaps one teammate could no longer endure such monotonous days—he suddenly looked up and exclaimed loudly: "How about we order some food? I haven't tasted anything delicious in ages!" This remark broke through like a stone thrown into a calm lake creating ripples all around. Everyone chimed in agreement enthusiastically; after all these days eating bland boxed meals had left us craving something more flavorful.
However, new problems arose: with everything under lockdown now where could we buy ingredients? For a moment silence fell over the room as people frowned deep in thought or scratched their heads trying to devise a solution. Just then an idea flashed through my mind; I excitedly exclaimed: "I wonder if supermarkets are still open? If they are then we can go buy some ingredients for hot pot!" This suggestion lit up everyone’s spirits like a beacon in darkness; during such special times supermarkets were usually allowed to operate for ensuring residents' basic supply needs.
As soon as I finished speaking, what had been a quiet room instantly erupted into lively chatter. Some shouted they wanted delicious boneless chicken feet; others eagerly called out for tender tripe; still others listed various vegetables and meats they wished for as if envisioning an abundant feast laid out before them. After a brief yet joyful commotion everyone quickly sprang into action organizing themselves—one group sought out electric stoves while another set off without hesitation towards the supermarket for ingredients.
In less than an hour all necessary items were prepared and laid out neatly. At this point everyone gathered in the room forming a tight circle around a steaming hot pot filled with enticing aromas that made mouths water as they swallowed nervously.
Looking closely at each dish ordered by everyone had already been served up filling up the center table making it incredibly tempting! Just then I could no longer contain my excitement; I blurted out: "It should be about ready now! Let me try first!" Before I even finished speaking my hand reached forward swiftly grabbing a piece of food into my mouth—but just as that first bite entered my mouth before I could swallow I suddenly noticed all eyes around me fixated intensely upon me as if piercing right through me.
Faced with everyone's eager anticipation I hurriedly chewed a few times before replying: "It tastes really good—simply amazing! Let's dig in!" No sooner had I spoken than chopsticks shot forward like lightning into the pot competing fiercely over desired ingredients—a scene so lively it defied description!
For us this marked our very first hot pot meal since embarking on this mission half a month ago! Looking back now perhaps it was precisely because we hadn’t tasted such delicious food for so long that made us cherish that meal even more feeling it was extraordinarily delectable; or maybe it was due to being in such unique circumstances surrounded by these special teammates that highlighted its unique charm even further.
