The urgent ringing of the phone cut through the air, and upon receiving orders from my superiors, I learned that a Mountain Fire had broken out in Beibei, my hometown. A wave of concern washed over me as I reached out to friends and scrolled through social media, confirming the alarming news. Without hesitation, I organized my team and set off for the scene.
As we arrived, we could see thick smoke billowing from the mountaintop, rising into the sky and darkening the atmosphere. We rushed to the foot of the mountain, where police had already cordoned off the area with bright yellow tape, preventing unauthorized personnel from entering. Nearby, a group of enthusiastic volunteers was busy setting up tents to store various rescue supplies.
We quickly got out of our vehicles and exchanged a few words with the police officers stationed at the checkpoint. After they carefully checked our credentials and inquired about our purpose, they finally allowed us to enter the mountainous area. Following the winding mountain road, we soon reached our first assembly point. Here, a small reservoir lay quietly nestled among the hills, resembling a green gem embedded in nature. At this moment, many volunteers gathered by the reservoir, some hastily preparing to head up the mountain while others looked exhausted after just returning from their efforts.
Our mission area was further up the mountain. Since there were no roads for vehicles to continue on, we had no choice but to park our team vehicle by the roadside. With heavy equipment on our backs, we began our trek toward the target location. The rugged terrain made progress difficult, but everyone was united by a single belief: to complete our mission as quickly as possible!
As we moved along the path, we were surprised to find various items neatly stacked by the roadside. These included medicines, fragrant boxed meals, and refreshing bottles of mineral water, creating a unique sight. Every short distance revealed another pile of supplies as if someone had deliberately arranged them.
After about twenty minutes of walking, we finally reached what was labeled as a temporary rest area. In reality, it was just an open patch of land by the roadside. There, an honest-looking local man squatted attentively over valuable supplies. His weathered face and rough hands suggested he was a villager from a nearby settlement.
Our main tasks for this mission were twofold: first, to assist government departments in establishing an effective Isolation Zone to prevent any potential outbreak; second, to carry out firefighting operations in areas at risk of spreading flames to ensure that the fire would not get out of control. Both tasks were daunting and filled with challenges; everyone understood the gravity of our responsibilities and dared not slack off.
I promptly divided our personnel into two small groups according to our plan. However, it was frustrating that there was a significant distance between our rest area and the location where we needed to clear for the Isolation Zone. Relying solely on foot would undoubtedly consume a lot of time and energy. Just then, fortune smiled upon us; members of the Blazing Knights appeared! Upon learning about our urgent mission, they readily offered us a ride.
With heartfelt gratitude, I carefully climbed onto one of their motorcycles. The moment I sat down, an indescribable feeling surged within me. I recalled how during past rescue missions for Mountain Fires in my military days, we had relied solely on our legs to navigate treacherous terrain. Each step was fraught with difficulty; sweat soaked through our clothes as we focused solely on extinguishing fires and protecting lives and property.
Yet now, years later in my hometown during another Mountain Fire rescue operation, I found myself speeding across mountains on a motorcycle. This stark contrast left me deeply reflective and appreciative of how modern technology has brought such conveniences.
This was just the beginning; what followed would be even more astonishing and jaw-dropping. As for what exaggerated events unfolded next—stay tuned for more details.
Before long, we arrived at the site designated as the Isolation Zone. The scene was bustling with activity; numerous figures moved swiftly about their tasks. Some wielded chainsaws vigorously cutting down trees while others carried heavy loads back and forth transporting felled timber. Witnessing this scene left no room for delay; I quickly called everyone to join in this intense and demanding labor.
It’s important to note that this was no easy task! Some tree trunks were as thick as bowls and towered impressively high. Moreover, while felling these large trees, we had to be constantly aware of their falling direction to avoid unnecessary dangers. To ensure safety, I specifically assigned one team member to oversee safety precautions.
Considering the sweltering heat and high physical demands of our work, I allowed everyone brief breaks every thirty minutes or so. Despite this, everyone remained highly motivated. It truly echoed that old saying: many hands make light work. Before long, we had cleared that small area of trees completely. After completing our task, everyone sat down on the ground to rest and recuperate.
At that moment, I noticed many team members looked quite disheveled. They were covered in sawdust from head to toe; some even had cuts on their hands from accidentally brushing against sharp wood during transport—blood flowing freely from their wounds; soaked clothes were commonplace here given that we were working in temperatures exceeding forty degrees Celsius alongside unbearable heat from nearby flames—everyone was drenched in sweat. Yet despite these harsh conditions, not a single person complained or chose to abandon their post.
The subsequent workflow mirrored what we had done before but required fewer personnel this time around. After careful regrouping into teams of three assigned to different firefighting departments for support assistance, I hurriedly sought out an experienced and fearless member of the Blazing Knights to request swift escorting me to participate in firefighting operations so that we could smoothly carry out subsequent urgent tasks.
Upon reaching the rest area again, I encountered two teammates coming down from ahead. I rushed over to ask them about their specific tasks moving forward. One paused briefly before responding: currently, our top priority is transporting a batch of fire extinguishers to the front lines since some personnel have already been stationed up there while we are responsible for transporting various essential firefighting supplies and equipment back and forth. After hearing this information, I realized time was pressing and responsibilities were heavy; without hesitation, I joined the supply transport team.
