"Every day, seeing you plunges me into regret. To be with you, I gave up better opportunities. Have you forgotten how much I suffered to bring our child into this world? Little Bao is so young; have you ever felt any pain for her?" I couldn't help but let my tears fall.
In the early stages of pregnancy, I dealt with morning sickness, and later, swelling and pelvic pain. During those tough times, he would gently rub my back and say it was hard for me, that when Little Bao grew up, he would tell her how much I endured to give birth to her.
But Little Bao is gone. Because of his parents, because of their preference for sons, and because of their indulgence towards their youngest son.
In the rental apartment, I had already packed his things. Our shared assets amounted to only fifty thousand. Since we got married, Lu Ningyuan's salary was slightly higher, while my income had dwindled due to having a child. Lu Ningyuan left all the money for me; he thought I was kind and believed that if I could just get through my current anger, we would be together again in the future.
Unfortunately, I wouldn't fulfill his wish.
When I encountered Xu Wei again, I was surprised. The once skinny Xiao Xiao had transformed into a handsome man. At that moment, I was leaving the kindergarten with my four-year-old Xiao Xiao, who spotted cotton candy in the distance and rushed forward. She didn’t see the approaching car until it stopped just before my gasp. As I anxiously checked on Xiao Xiao while holding her close, a figure approached—it was Xu Wei.
"Who are you? Is Xia Lin you?" Xu Wei asked.
"Yes, who are you?" I replied in confusion.
"I’m Xu Wei; do you remember me?"
Xu Wei... was he the one from elementary school who always chased after me asking for help with his homework?
"You've changed so much!" I exclaimed.
"Mommy, who is this uncle? I wanted cotton candy, so I ran fast. Next time I'll listen and not run," Xiao Xiao said as she gently wiped my tears.
"Yes, if you want something, just tell Mommy and I'll take you to buy it. Today was too dangerous; we can't do that again. You scared Mommy," I replied.
"Little friend, let Uncle take you to buy cotton candy," Xu Wei said to Xiao Xiao before turning back to me. "Wait here; I'll go park the car." I nodded silently.
After buying the long-desired cotton candy for Xiao Xiao, she insisted that I take the first bite. Looking at her bright eyes filled with joy warmed my heart.
After Xu Wei dropped us off at home, he left. Watching his retreating figure reminded me of my long-lost elementary school days.
In our subsequent conversations, I learned that after graduating from elementary school, his parents divorced and he moved north with his father. They lost contact due to the hurried circumstances.
"In fact, I've been looking for you for a long time. When I came back that time and saw you were getting married, I envied Lu Ningyuan," he said as he gazed deeply into my eyes. No wonder there was such a large sum in the wedding gift envelope; Lu Ningyuan had been jealous for a long time—it turned out it was Xu Wei.
"I was wondering if something happened to you since you suddenly disappeared," I replied awkwardly, unsure how to continue the conversation.
"Xia Xia, can you give me a chance?" Xu Wei asked intently.
"I... I've been divorced and have a daughter."
Could I really fall in love with someone else again?
"Xia Xia, just being able to meet you again is already a reward from heaven for me. I will treat Xiao Xiao like my own daughter," Xu Wei said eagerly.
"But, can you let me think about it for a while?" I hesitated.
"Sure, you must take your time to think it over," Xu Wei replied, his gaze fixed on me, the tenderness in his eyes seeming to melt me away.
Can I really walk out of here? Can I truly forget the past?
