The cold air flowed through Xie Cheng'an's secret hideout, and the mottled water stains on the walls cast eerie shadows under the dim candlelight. I curled up in the corner, my gaze involuntarily scrutinizing the enigmatic man before me.
The iron mask he wore glinted coldly in the candlelight, and his bottomless eyes concealed too many secrets.
"Have you been to Fairy Tower?" I broke the suffocating silence, my voice creating ripples in the empty basement.
Xie Cheng'an's gaze suddenly sharpened, like a sword drawn from its sheath. "Why do you ask that?"
"Don't be tense." I feigned nonchalance, shrugging my shoulders, though my fingertips trembled secretly. "I just want to know how extensive your intelligence network is. Qing Zhu is still at Xiao Residence; I must save her."
"Just for a maid?" He scoffed, a flash of disdain crossing his eyes. "Su Wan, you're still too emotional."
Anger flared within me, but I suppressed it. Pavilion Master Xie had always regarded lives as mere weeds; how could he care about the fate of a maid?
"Qing Zhu is more than just a maid; she is my friend." I met his gaze directly, enunciating each word carefully.
He fell silent for a moment before suddenly rising and deftly tossing a piece of white cloth onto my lap.
I unfolded it to reveal a detailed defense map of Xiao Residence, filled with intricate lines.
This unexpected gesture made my heart skip a beat.
"Are you really planning to help me? Why the sudden kindness?"
"Cooperation requires sincerity." He removed his mask, revealing a gruesome scar. "This is my sincerity."
I instinctively reached out, my fingertips brushing against the scar, a chill rising within me. "Did Xiao Jingyan do this?"
He seized my wrist with one hand, a glint of malice flashing in his eyes. "As expected of you; your guess is spot on. I am the illegitimate son of the Xiao Family, and that bastard is my half-brother."
I jerked my hand back, this shocking truth sending a shiver down my spine. "So you want his life? It sounds like something out of those clichéd novels."
"I want far more than just his life." Xie Cheng'an's gaze was like a poisoned blade.
"He killed my mother and took everything that rightfully belonged to me. I want him to suffer beyond death."
"Why are you telling me this?" I fixed my eyes on his expression.
"Because our enemies are one and the same." He sneered. "Xiao Jingyan, and that white lotus Liu Ru Yan."
"Liu Ru Yan?" I scoffed lightly. "She's nothing but a fool who steals nail polish."
Xie Cheng'an suddenly burst into laughter, his laughter carrying an icy chill. "Do you really think she's just an innocent young lady without any power?"
He took out a scroll from the hidden compartment and unfurled it before me. The woman in the painting wore a red dress and held a dagger, her gaze sharp as frost.
“Liu Ru Yan, the top dark investigator in the capital. She approached Xiao Jingyan to carry out a secret order from the court.”
I shivered, “She... has killed?”
“Killed?” Xie Cheng'an's laughter turned colder, “Thirty-seven lives of Xishu Merchants, in one night, she struck without mercy.”
A chill ran down my spine as Liu Ru Yan's pitiful face flashed in my mind. Her disguise was indeed flawless.
“Does Xiao Jingyan know her identity?”
“Of course.” Xie Cheng'an's voice was low and ghostly, “These two colluding scoundrels have conspired against me.”
