Wow, what an exciting day it is! The day to check the Zhongkao scores has arrived, and Lin Wufeng couldn't wait to rush to the entrance of the First High School, anxiously wanting to see how the scores turned out this year.
Hey, what great news! Zhuang Xiaoxiao and Lin Xiaoyu did exceptionally well, scoring twenty to thirty points above the First High School's cutoff line. Their results were truly impressive. And then there's Lin Dongzhe, affectionately nicknamed "the Leak Picker" by everyone; he also managed to surpass the cutoff line, securing his place in the school.
As soon as this news spread, the courtyard erupted with excitement, laughter ringing out everywhere as everyone celebrated. As for Peng Fei, although he didn’t reach the First High School's cutoff due to a shaky foundation and ended up at the Affiliated Middle School, it was still a decent place for him.
Seeing the students' results, Teacher Zhuang wore a satisfied smile, feeling immensely proud of their hard work finally paying off.
Ever since entering the First High School, Lin Dongzhe had been strutting around with a sense of pride, feeling quite accomplished. Although he pretended to study hard at school after classes began, his mind was hardly focused on academics.
One day, he got into trouble for being mischievous and was punished by having to stand. After a test where scores were announced, Lin Dongzhe was staring at his own results with a sigh when he suddenly noticed Xiao Ting hunched over her desk, crying softly. He was taken aback and had no idea what was wrong with her. As he approached and took a closer look, he realized that she had scored only ten points on this test; no wonder she was feeling so down.
Lin Dongzhe hurried over and patted Xiao Ting on the shoulder, saying, "Hey, it’s okay! One bad score isn’t a big deal. Don’t cry, don’t cry." He made funny faces and told jokes to cheer her up. Just like that, they chatted and laughed all the way home together.
Meanwhile, Lin Xiaoyu had become incredibly disciplined since starting high school. Every day after finishing her homework, she would consistently head to the Youth Palace for training, putting in one to two hours each time. After such persistent effort and training over time, she had become quite skilled in her area of focus—so impressive that it made people want to give her a thumbs up.
From then on, Xiao Ting's life included Lin Dongzhe as her loyal little follower.
That evening, the sunset cast a golden hue over the campus. As usual, Xiao Ting bounced over to the bike shed to retrieve her bicycle for the ride home but was shocked to find her bike's tire flat as if it had deflated like a balloon. Frustrated and anxious, her eyes quickly filled with tears.
At that moment, Lin Dongzhe happened to walk by and saw what was happening; he immediately felt furious. His bright eyes seemed to burn with anger as he marched over to a group of older boys who were laughing and whispering nearby. The boys were tall and imposing compared to Lin Dongzhe's smaller frame. Undeterred, he looked up at them defiantly and shouted, "Did you guys let the air out of Xiao Ting's bike tire?"
One boy with dyed blonde hair spat dismissively and sneered, "So what if we did? Mind your own business!"
Lin Dongzhe's face flushed red with anger as he clenched his fists. "How can you bully a girl like that? It's too much!" The blonde boy grew enraged and pushed Lin Dongzhe hard. He stumbled back and fell to the ground but quickly got back up and charged at them again.
However, he was no match for them; they surrounded him and began hitting him mercilessly. Lin Dongzhe instinctively raised his arms to protect his head but continued to receive blows that felt like searing hot iron against his skin. His lip split open and bled while a large bump formed on his forehead; his glasses were knocked off his face, making everything blurrier. Yet he kept shouting, "You can't do this!"
After what felt like an eternity of being beaten up, they finally grew tired and left him there cursing as they walked away. Struggling to get up from the ground, Lin Dongzhe wobbled toward Xiao Ting. She was already in tears from fright; seeing him battered made her heart ache even more. Wiping away blood from his mouth with a forced smile, he said softly, "Xiao Ting, don’t cry; I’m fine."
Xiao Ting choked back tears as she replied, "You’re hurt so badly! Why did you have to be so foolish and fight them?"
Lin Dongzhe tilted his head slightly and looked at her earnestly. "I saw them bullying you; how could I just stand by? I won’t let anyone hurt you."
Tears streamed down Xiao Ting's face again as she said, "But you got hurt! It makes me feel worse."
Lin Dongzhe gently patted her shoulder and reassured her: "Silly girl, these injuries are nothing as long as you’re not bullied."
Dragging his weary and aching body home, Lin Dongzhe stepped through the door only for Song Ying to gasp at his pitiful appearance. His clothes were torn; bruises marred his face; his hair looked like a bird's nest. Song Ying’s heart sank instantly as she trembled with concern. "Son! What happened? Who did this to you?"
Lin Dongzhe felt a pang of fear; he knew he couldn’t tell the truth or else his mother would definitely go after those boys or complain at school. So he lowered his head to avoid her anxious gaze and pretended nonchalant: "Mom, I just tripped and fell pretty hard; don’t worry about it."
Song Ying held him tightly while examining his wounds closely: "This doesn’t look like just falling! Don’t lie to me!"
Lin Dongzhe forced out a smile: "Really! I tripped over a rock while walking and rolled around a bit."
Seeing him trying so hard to act calm made Song Ying suspicious but she didn’t press further; instead she cried while tending to his wounds and scolded him for being so careless. Meanwhile, Lin Dongzhe silently endured the pain from his injuries while thinking that as long as he could protect Xiao Ting, everything else didn’t matter.
