William had not responded a single word online, no matter how many times Lilian typed the question, "Are you there?"
"That's not a ghost; it's just a boring prank!" Exhausted, Lilian slumped down in the leather swivel chair at her desk.
In front of her was a black laptop covered with thick black gauze, its green power indicator glowing faintly, as if it were whispering some unknown secret.
Whoever "William" was, hidden on the other side of the internet, seemed irrelevant to Lilian at that moment. What mattered was that she had been cruelly toyed with for two long years.
She wearily rubbed her temples, her mind flashing through the faces of several boys rumored to have had crushes on her. She bitterly wondered who had the patience to play such a long game with her.
The Snow Mastiff continued to roar wildly outside, while the only sound came from the leaves of the Eucalyptus Tree rustling in the gentle breeze, as if softly murmuring something.
"This is the computer William used in his lifetime. In his last words, he requested that it always be on so his soul could forever merge with the internet. Also, he stubbornly insisted that I keep updating that telescope, aimed at the moon, to comfort his spirit in heaven. He loved the moon and always believed no one understood it better than he did..." Old William's words suddenly sparked something in Lilian's mind.
She hesitantly reached out and moved the mouse in front of her, and the computer screen lit up.
As expected, the wallpaper displayed a massive lunar data image, identical to one on her own computer. She then glanced towards the right side of the desk where the camera was pointed and saw a perfectly hung colored photograph of Kankasim William on the wall during his moon landing. In the photo, his deep blue eyes seemed to smile kindly at Lilian, radiating a familiar warmth.
Old William explained nearby: "That is the only colored photograph of a moon landing on Earth, taken by a fellow astronaut without any negatives—one shot only. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration once wanted to reclaim it, but William preferred being demoted rather than giving it up."
Lilian steadied herself and took a deep breath before saying slowly and deliberately, "He... is... in... this... room!"
Old William jumped in surprise and quickly looked around the study, confusion filling his eyes as he hesitantly asked, "Who? Who do you say is in this study? There are only the two of us here and my beloved dog Sarah. Hey, Sarah! Stop barking! My poor child, have you been so traumatized that your mind has gone awry?"
Indeed, in the spacious study, there were only two people and a dog. However, Lilian pointed at the chair she had just occupied for a few seconds and replied with unwavering certainty, "Mr. Old William, that chair was warm just now, which proves that someone has been sitting there for at least over two hours. May I ask if you or anyone else entered before I arrived at the villa?"
Old William was taken aback by Lilian's words, his expression one of confusion. He instinctively shook his head and reached out to gently stroke the chair, as if trying to find some clue from it.
Lilian quickly walked to the window, placing her hands on the windowsill, and shouted with all her might, "William, William, I know you're here! Come out! I'm here to see you. No matter what secrets you have, I can understand. William, I've fallen in love with you; please come out and meet me!"
This was the first time in her life that she had boldly revealed her emotional world so openly. The seeds of love had long since taken root in her heart and were now thriving under the sunlight and rain, growing branches and leaves. Even if William were merely an illusion or perhaps a ghost, she wanted to see him with her own eyes to feel satisfied.
In her heart, William had become more than just her Electronic Lover; he was like a giant Eucalyptus Tree that had grown in the garden of her youth, weaving a dreamlike garland of youthful infatuation with its branches and leaves.
