"What’s wrong? You look half-dead. What time did you go to bed last night? Play fewer games at night!" As Yun Wan'er glanced at Shi Tianyi while bustling around in the kitchen, she casually chided him.
After that, she brought out a plate of fried eggs, and the three of them began their meal.
He hadn’t been playing games; his phone had malfunctioned. He had spent the entire night trying to fix it but ultimately couldn’t save it! Not wanting to engage further, Yun Wan'er remained silent. However, Shi Tian felt he could probe her a bit.
His phone was essential; if it was broken, surely Yun Wan'er would have something to say about it!
Sure enough, upon hearing that Shi Tian's phone was broken, Yun Wan'er replied nonchalantly, "Just get a new one! That phone has been with you for four years; you bought it when you just started college. It’s about time for an upgrade!"
Hearing this from Yun Wan'er, Shi Tian felt a glimmer of hope. "Lao Shi, didn’t you just get a new phone recently? You could lend me that one!"
Yun Wan'er’s suggestion made Shi Tian shake his head helplessly. Lao Shi’s phone? That was just a second-hand device that Yun Wan'er had replaced; now it would be passed down to him as a third-hand item!
Yet even a third-hand phone was better than his problematic one. Who knew what kind of mess that rogue software on his phone could cause? Last night, he had tried to track down the source of that software and spent half the night searching for it, only to find it was like a desktop icon.
With such powerful rogue software on his phone, Shi Tian didn’t dare use it anymore. Privacy concerns aside, what if he lost all his meager savings because of that software? He wouldn’t have time to cry over it!
Now that he had a potential solution for his phone issue, Shi Tian felt his plan to escape could be set in motion again. The longer he stayed at home, the greater the risk. As long as Shi Chui and Yun Wan'er remained silent, he still had a chance; once they spoke up, he would lose any opportunity to leave.
"I need to step out later to meet some classmates. It’s been six months since we last got together; who knows when we’ll meet again!" With the phone issue resolved, he needed to act quickly on his escape plan.
Meeting classmates was just an excuse for Shi Tian. He mentioned getting together but didn’t specify where they would meet—surely that wasn’t lying!
Shi Tian thought about it; deceiving his family was not something he wanted to do. Once he had the chance, he could grab a cup of milk tea with a classmate, and that would be an easy explanation!
He hadn’t attended many gatherings during college; usually, it was just barbecues with a few roommates. Anything more extravagant was beyond their financial means.
Of course, this wasn’t absolute! Even though some of his roommates came from well-off families, they all donned the guise of being broke so they could hang out together!
"Classmate gathering? Boys or girls?" Upon hearing Shi Tian mention meeting classmates, Yun Wan'er perked up. However, her concern wasn’t about Shi Tian’s friends but whether any future daughters-in-law might be among them.
"I know what you’re thinking—don’t even go there!" Shi Tian shot her an exasperated glance. "During my freshman self-introduction, I said my family sold a few pigs to scrape together my tuition fees. Since then, I’ve basically avoided any romantic entanglements in college!"
Shi Tian wasn’t exaggerating; during his first year at university, he met a roommate from the northwest who mentioned that his family sold two cows to help pay for his tuition. Being playful at the time, Shi Tian borrowed that story during his introduction.
Selling two cows for tuition was true enough; however, the other guy’s family owned a ranch—losing two cows wouldn’t even be noticeable!
Shi Tian hadn’t realized how vast the difference was between selling cows and selling pigs!
Over four years of college, that roommate from the northwest pursued Xi Ying successfully; upon graduation, they happily walked off together to tend cattle. As for him? Forget about Xi Ying—he hadn’t even mustered up the courage to ask anyone out!
This remark made Yun Wan'er furrow her brows.
Her son was growing up and had reached the age where he should start dressing well. While it wasn’t necessary for him to wear luxury brands from head to toe, he certainly shouldn’t be wearing a ten-dollar shirt that would make people look down on him!
Shi Tian was quite handsome, inheriting Yun Wan'er’s good genes and Shi Chui’s height. Coupled with a comfortable living environment and not having been weathered by harsh conditions, he was a catch wherever he went.
However, reality often trumps fairy tales; despite being such an outstanding young man, he hadn’t managed to bring home a girlfriend during his four years in college, which left Yun Wan'er feeling somewhat defeated.
“I’ll take you out to buy a few clothes later; you need to spruce yourself up a bit! You’re not a kid anymore. After four years in college, how come you haven’t even chased after a girlfriend?”
When she first met Shi Chui, they were both broke as could be! But so what? By the time they graduated from college, Shi Tian would be able to afford soy sauce!
Yun Wan'er still had a keen sense of fashion. After breakfast, she dragged Shi Tian around the city for a bit. After discussing some matters, they headed to the mall.
By the end of their shopping trip, Shi Tian had completely revamped his wardrobe, even upgrading his phone to the latest domestic model, which cost several thousand dollars. His heart ached at the thought of spending so much.
Unfortunately, Yun Wan'er didn’t buy him a watch. It wasn’t that she was stingy with money; she simply felt it wasn’t necessary.
Shi Tian was just a freshly graduated student; if he chose an expensive watch, it wouldn’t match his identity and could lead to misunderstandings. If he opted for a cheaper one, it might come off as frivolous. It was better not to wear one at all; that would look cleaner and more straightforward.
“Should we drive to the gathering later?” Yun Wan'er asked as she carefully inspected her son from head to toe, ensuring there were no flaws in his appearance.
“Drive? No way,” Shi Tian replied decisively, shaking his head.
