Five miscellaneous fish had already been caught, and there was a commotion coming from the old man's side—he had hooked a fish!
When the old man hooked a fish, it was a big deal. Air Force, Shi Ye, and Lu Ya rushed over with the net, eager to help land the catch. It was the old man's moment of glory, and Shi Tian couldn't just stand by; he put away his fishing rod and joined in the excitement.
Of course, joining in was just one part of it. Fishing in the bushes was no picnic; he was nearly being devoured by mosquitoes. Shi Ye and the others spent every day in the woods, so they must have their own ways of dealing with mosquitoes. Shi Tian could only seek their advice.
Seeing the old man haul in a carp weighing around three to four pounds, Shi Tian turned to Shi Ye and asked, "Brother Ye, there are mosquitoes everywhere over here. Do you have anything to keep them away?"
Glancing at the thicket where Shi Tian had emerged, Shi Ye shook his head helplessly and replied, "If you want to catch fish, you need to clear a fishing spot first. Use a sickle to trim some of the grass around; otherwise, casting your line will be a hassle!"
The old man had caught a big fish and was in high spirits. He pulled out a box of solid Wind Oil Essence from his pocket and said, "Apply this on your skin, and the mosquitoes won't bite you! This stuff is better than floral water; it lasts longer. Just one application will keep the bugs away for half a day!"
The old man knew that Shi Tian had a two-meter-seven rod specifically for catching Bai Tiao, so casting wasn't an issue for him. After receiving the Wind Oil Essence, Shi Tian applied some to his skin and washed his hands before diving back into the thicket.
Clear a fishing spot? That would waste too much time! With that time, he could have caught at least ten small fish!
The water area here wasn't large, which meant there wouldn't be many big fish. Besides Shi Tian, everyone else was using large hooks, so naturally, the fishing conditions weren't great.
The old man was fine; with one big fish secured, even if the fishing conditions were poor, he wasn't anxious. But Air Force and Shi Ye were getting restless as small fish were causing them headaches.
Using large hooks for small fish was futile; aside from Ma Kou and Qiao Zui, they couldn't catch anything else.
Shi Ye was the first to lose patience. After checking in with the others, he finally made his way into the thicket where Shi Tian was and asked, "Xiao Tian, do you have any smaller Sleeve Hooks?"
They had brought Sleeve Hooks too, but the smallest ones were size four. A size four Sleeve Hook is about one centimeter long with a width of nearly half a centimeter; it’s fine for catching fish over two taels but too large for smaller ones like Bitterling or Mai Sui.
Shi Ye came to borrow hooks, and Shi Tian was more than willing to help. After returning home last night, he had made quite a few hooks—especially sizes one and two of Number Three Sleeve Hooks—so he had plenty.
"They're in my Fishing Box; I have sizes one through three. I tied quite a few last night; just go get them!" After replying to Shi Ye, Shi Tian cast his line again and caught two finger-sized Mai Sui that went straight into his Yu Hu.
Shaking his head helplessly, Shi Ye turned around to grab some hooks.
He was used to catching big fish; now having to help the old man catch Mai Sui felt a bit odd.
But having Mai Sui was still better than not catching anything at all!
Shi Ye switched to a Number Two Sleeve Hook and entered continuous casting mode. Air Force and Lu Ya followed suit and began frantically reeling in Bai Tiao while only the old man remained steady at his fishing spot, intently watching his float as another Fish Star approached—this one looked even bigger than the last!
Catching Fish Star relied on experience. Since Shi Tian had just started fishing, he didn't have that instinct yet; when he saw bubbles rising in his spot, he would call out for help and then move on to another area to continue catching Bai Tiao.
Actually, fishing for Bai Tiao can be quite addictive, especially when using a double-tailed rod; the feeling is just exhilarating. By noon, the Air Force team was still crazily fishing for Bai Tiao. Shi Tian wasn't hungry, but considering the old man’s age, if he got too hungry, it could lead to serious trouble for them!
Just then, Fish Star arrived at their spot. Shi Tian called the old man over while he went to start a fire and prepare lunch. A dish of creamy egg steamed bun slices was all they had for their midday meal. Just as the bun slices were ready, the old man managed to haul in a four-kilogram Grass Carp. After distributing the bun slices to everyone, their Bai Tiao fishing continued.
"Xiao Tian, is that the rod tip you broke yesterday?" In the evening, Lu Ya pointed at a Float barely visible in the water and shouted. When a Fishing Rod breaks, it initially gets pulled along by the fish and doesn't sink right away. However, as time passes, it gradually sinks into the water; yet the Float still has some buoyancy. If the fish swims into shallow water, there’s still a chance it might surface.
Hearing Lu Ya call him, Shi Tian picked up his Fishing Rod and hurried over. Last night, Shi Tian had indeed struggled with insomnia for quite some time—not because he had hooked his lip with a Fish Hook, but because he had obtained a box that could produce Fishing Gear and because of that big fish that got away.
"Yes, that's the Float!" He exclaimed. He had bought two sets at that time; there was still another identical set in his Fishing Box! Upon seeing the Float, Shi Tian immediately confirmed it.
Once they identified the Float, Lu Ya wasted no time. He took out his Lure Rod and swapped in a Hook that Shi Tian couldn’t name before casting it out. One cast yielded nothing, so he tried again! After three or five casts, Lu Ya finally hooked onto the Broken Rod and carefully dragged it towards the shore.
Helping Shi Tian recover his gear was something they were all eager to do. After nearly half an hour of effort, they managed to retrieve both the broken rod tip and the unfortunate fish that had been stuck for a day and night.
The fish wasn’t very big—just over three kilograms—but it was mainly due to Shi Tian’s Rod not being sturdy enough to handle even a three-kilogram fish. It made sense when you thought about it: five Ten Dollars included two sets of finished lines; if you divided that cost among the Rods, it would amount to no more than thirty dollars. The three Ten Dollar Fiberglass Rods meant that the shopkeeper needed to make a profit too; getting ten dollars from each sale would be quite good.
What kind of Fishing Rod can you buy for ten dollars? You can't even get a toy rod! Shi Tian had spent most of the day using one Rod and caught so many Bai Tiao; that was already quite generous!
The pond was only so big; once they cast their Lure out, others could forget about fishing for at least half an hour without any bites. They packed up their things and decided to head back for some fish! Looking at the three-kilogram Carp in Shi Tian's hands, the old man chuckled and said.
