In five minutes, Sun Lang finished his meal and looked up at Shi Tian. "Yesterday, I didn't throw in any bait, and the fish activity is clearly not as good as the day before! You should throw in some bait more often; otherwise, we won't catch anything!"
Over the past two days, Shi Tian had been exploring the Fishing Spot and managed to catch a few fish. However, that small amount was hardly enough to make a noticeable impact on the fishing conditions.
While Shi Tian was working, Sun Lang was out fishing. He had grown accustomed to the fishing conditions, and when they were poor, it left him feeling unsatisfied.
"Why don't you help me watch the shop while I go get some bait? I can guarantee that I'll bring back a couple of pounds in the morning, which should be enough for baiting!" Shi Tian suggested enticingly, glancing at Sun Lang.
After giving it some thought, Sun Lang tidied up the counter and grabbed his Fishing Box. He almost crossed the street but suddenly stopped and turned back. "How long does it take for the bait to start working?"
Sun Lang's question caught Shi Tian off guard. Did he really intend to let him go get bait?
"It usually takes about half an hour to an hour for it to start working! The other day when I threw in the bait, when did Old Zhang start catching fish? How would he know how long it takes for the bait to work? That wasn't really baiting; he just wanted to get rid of the stinky bait and feed the fish!"
Shi Tian recalled that Old Zhang started catching fish shortly after Sun Lang left, and he had caught several. The bait must have worked quickly!
Thinking back on it, Sun Lang replied to Shi Tian, "I'll help you watch the shop if you go get some bait for me! But you have to be back by eleven-thirty!"
After saying this, Sun Lang hesitated for a moment before adding, "Can I borrow your car at noon? Su Xueyi doesn't have classes in the afternoon, so I want to pick her up."
Upon hearing this, Shi Tian finally understood—Sun Lang was planning to go on a date with Su Xueyi! But what did he need bait for on a date? Surely he wasn't planning to bring her along just to watch him fish!
"If you have a driver's license, just drive it yourself. If not, you might as well ride your bike! I won't be using my car this afternoon; if you want to drive it, go ahead! Just make sure it doesn't delay your return home tonight!"
"I have a driver's license! Hurry up and go get that bait! It’ll be too hot later!" Sun Lang urged as he helped clean up Shi Tian's empty lunch box.
He still needed to impress Su Xueyi later! If he didn’t catch more fish, how could he attract bigger ones? That would ruin his plans!
After being pushed out of the shop by Sun Lang, Shi Tian shook his head helplessly and drove to a Fishing Spot he had scouted earlier. He began his quest for bait.
To be fair, the resources at these Fishing Spots provided by Hu Bu Shi were indeed quite abundant compared to the small ponds and rivers from before. Moreover, the fish here were noticeably larger than those in the previous two locations; even the smaller ones were around seven or eight centimeters!
While Shi Tian was busy getting bait, some old-timers from Kyoto were out trying to catch big fish.
Due to strict regulations on fishing in most areas of Beijing, many places prohibited fishing altogether. However, within the capital region where many skilled anglers resided, there were still quite a few who enjoyed fishing. After several discussions and meetings, numerous Fishing Spots were opened up.
In Shunyi's Tide River area alone, over three hundred free Fishing Spots were established. Just yesterday, someone caught a forty-pound Azure Catfish. The old-timer immediately informed his son Kong Fan that they would be going fishing together tomorrow.
Kong Fan was a busy man; he was either in meetings or on his way to one. When would he have time to accompany those old men fishing?
To go fishing in the suburbs, they took turns driving. Today it was the old-timer's turn; there was no choice but to assign this task to Kong Fan!
Faced with this situation, Kong Fan had his own ways of dealing with it. If he had time, he would definitely accompany those old men fishing himself. If not, he would arrange for someone else from his family to take his place—his wife would be prioritized if she was available.
If his wife couldn't make it either, then he'd ask his younger sister who had just gotten married a few years ago and let them figure it out together!
The timing of the old man's call was perfect; Kong Fan had the time tomorrow. It was simple enough. At four-thirty in the morning, under the barrage of the old man's phone calls, a bleary-eyed Kong Fan drove a few elderly gentlemen straight to Shunyi.
Even at this hour, as they rushed to the fishing spot, the riverbank was dotted with the silhouettes of fishermen. Big fish had been caught here, and many had come to fish through the night, ready for an all-nighter.
They found a less crowded area and dropped their heavy weights to find the bottom. After a few minutes of intense fishing, Kong Fan stood alone, watching over their gear while the elderly gentlemen, equipped with headlamps, strolled along the riverbank to inquire about the fish conditions.
The effect of the bait was quite good; a few carp weighing around a pound were caught, and each of the elderly gentlemen had something to show for their efforts.
As noon approached, the bites became fewer, and they switched to their longer rods. The eight-meter rods were all picked up from Shi Tian's fishing tackle shop by the old man. Ever since he distributed rods to them, their previous ones had fallen out of favor!
Kong Fan's support was commendable; he handed out water, netted fish, and even ran off to buy breakfast for the elderly gentlemen, allowing them to focus intently on fishing.
After drinking too much water, they needed to find a place to relieve themselves. Being respectable individuals, they felt embarrassed about doing so openly on the street.
"Keep an eye on my rod; I need to use the restroom!" one of the elderly gentlemen said as he stood up.
"But you know I can't fish!" Kong Fan replied with a wry smile as he watched the old man leave the fishing spot.
"Just watch the float; when it sinks, lift the rod! The fish will be there!" The old man hurriedly added without looking back as he walked briskly toward the restroom.
With no choice left, Kong Fan sat on the old man's fishing box to keep an eye on his float, worried that a fish might drag his rod into the river!
After returning from Sanya, the old man brought back a complete set of rods that he cherished dearly. He spent half an hour each day polishing them when he got home. He even had Kong Fan arrange for a custom-made metal cabinet where he would lock them up after cleaning—no one was allowed to touch them.
However, he always left behind a beautifully crafted golden silk nanmu box at home whenever he went fishing. Perhaps he thought it was too heavy and inconvenient to carry?
If a fish dragged his precious rod into the river, it was likely that he would sever ties with Kong Fan!
Maybe the fish in the river sensed that someone new was at this fishing spot and decided to take advantage. As soon as the old man left, the float went completely dark!
Following the old man's principle—when it sinks, lift!—Kong Fan imitated what he had seen earlier. He suddenly lifted his rod high; it bent into a perfect arc as a sharp slicing sound echoed along the riverbank!
