On a boat, having just one licensed person is usually enough. Checking licenses at sea is rare; even if there is a check, it takes time. First, they would call over the radio, and once the boat stops, who would remember who was steering it just moments ago?
After heading out to sea, Hai Li found that his phone had lost signal. It was said that the mobile coverage around Sanya extended over forty kilometers along the coast, but Shi Tian didn’t know how to use it properly. He probably needed to install a special signal receiver; in any case, his phone had no signal!
Drifting on the water for nearly an hour, Scallion and Ginger to Remove Fishy Smell announced, “Let’s fish here. The water is deep—over a meter—and there are plenty of Red Drum around. Given the color of the water today, it looks promising!”
Red Drum are deep-sea fish that typically inhabit coral reefs at depths of several dozen meters to over a hundred meters. It’s quite difficult to catch them near the shore. Even if one were caught, it would likely be a small juvenile.
Arriving at the fishing spot, Shi Tian hurriedly assembled his rod. He had only taken a brief interest in this set of boat fishing equipment when he first got it and had been calculating how to find a fisherman to take him out to sea ever since, so he hadn’t assembled it until now!

Boat fishing does have rod holders, but they are much shorter than those for hand rods. By placing the rod on the holder, one can easily lift it whenever needed, which is quite convenient.
“No need; I’ll hold it in my hands while I fish. Just help me connect the electric reel; this is my first time using one! I’m a bit confused!”
The electric reel isn’t just a simple throttle that automatically reels in when pushed. From setting up the rod to threading the line and fishing, using an electric reel requires some learning.
“This wheel is a bit too big for domestic use; it’s somewhat wasteful here. You rarely encounter fish over a pound domestically; even when fishing for tuna, you wouldn’t need such a large wheel!”
After saying this, Scallion and Ginger began teaching Shi Tian how to install the electric reel.
Attaching the wheel to the rod was quite simple. To fish for big fish, there were two metal clips that could be screwed onto the rod, making it much sturdier than ordinary wheels.
“You’ve got some slack on your line; let’s let some line out and re-thread it later. Otherwise, if you hook a big fish, it could be troublesome!” After pressing down on Shi Tian’s wheel line, Scallion and Ginger casually reminded him.
For standard Iso Rods or Lure Rods, you just soak the line in a bucket of water and tie it onto the wheel; after all, catching a fish weighing thirty or forty pounds would be quite an achievement.
Deep-sea boat fishing requires considerable power from the electric reel; if the line is loose, reeling in becomes difficult. This detail should be taken seriously.
With the rod assembled, Scallion and Ginger tied on a lead weight and casually tossed it into Hai Li. With a flick of the switch, line began to slowly unwind from the spool.
This knob adjusts the line release speed; you can speed it up or slow it down. The handle here on this wheel adjusts the drag; after catching a fish, you need to set it to its loosest for re-threading later—just tighten it slightly.
While introducing Shi Tian to the electric reel, Scallion and Ginger continued releasing line.
Shi Tian managed to spool eight meters of line onto his wheel; letting it all out would take some time. As Scallion and Ginger released line from behind him, Shi Tian ran to the front of the boat to steer while marking down this location’s coordinates—this fishing spot would be his from now on!
Once all the line was released, Scallion and Ginger helped him re-thread it properly. Finally, Shi Tian was ready to fish.
The electric reel had three buttons; pressing both sides together for several seconds activated it. After adjusting the line and pressing down in the middle for a few seconds reset the electric reel. When he hooked a fish later and activated it again, the line would automatically stop at that point to prevent breaking his rod!
Cutting off a slice of squid and hooking it onto his hook under Scallion and Ginger’s guidance, Shi Tian began releasing line again. In over a meter of deep sea water, he had to pause intermittently as he waited for his hook to reach bottom—it took some time.
Once the hook reached bottom, he would feel it and then pull up some line; otherwise, he risked snagging on something!
The skills of Scallion and Ginger to Remove Fishy Smell were significantly superior to those of the Air Force. It was possible that the Air Force didn't want to teach him, dragging him along just to have him work as a laborer on the boat, allowing him to hold a rod for a bit of fun was already a kindness.
Boat fishing was quite different from shore fishing and Taiwanese Fishing. Even with a non-customized rod, one could still feel the fish biting. Before the hook even reached the bottom, Shi Tian could sense a tugging force.
He raised his hand and struck hard—he had hooked a fish!

At first, the pulling force on the rod was quite strong, but as the line got shorter, the fish's strength gradually diminished. Just from this alone, it was highly likely that it was a Red Drum!
As soon as the fish broke the surface, Shi Tian manually reeled in two more loops of line. He lifted the rod, and a three-pound Red Drum flew up into his hands!
This was Shi Tian's first time seeing a Red Drum. His only impression was that its swim bladder had been expelled from its mouth; as for that bulging belly, it must have been full of air!
After unhooking the fish, Scallion and Ginger to Remove Fishy Smell searched for a while but couldn't find a large needle. This fish clearly wouldn’t survive; what should they do? Throw it in the ice storage!
"Xiao Tian, is there an ice storage on board?"
"Ice storage? Yes! But there's no ice. I'll just put it in the fridge!"
There was no ice in the ice storage, no fresh water in the water tank, and no seawater in the live well. The only place left to store the fish was indeed the fridge!
The seawater was fine; just turn on the pump for circulating water. However, since this fish wouldn’t survive anyway, it would be better to quickly put it in the fridge while it was still fresh.
Wrapping the fish in cling film, he opened the fridge and tossed it inside. He grabbed two bottles of drinks before heading back to the stern where Scallion and Ginger to Remove Fishy Smell had already helped him cast out again.
"Here, have a drink to cool off!" Shi Tian handed Scallion and Ginger to Remove Fishy Smell a bottle of drink while subtly nudging him aside; once again, the rod fell back into his hands.
