It wasn't impossible. This rod of mine was custom-made, even the design was randomly selected from the Fishing Box menu. Giving the old man a spare rod wasn't a big deal; after all, he wouldn't have it for long anyway.
"Old man, this spare rod is fine, but this custom rod is mine. I should be the one to catch the first fish, right? I need to use it first before lending it to you!"
Seeing Shi Tian relent, Old Liu immediately switched to a smiling face. "That's only right! No shop would use a brand new rod as a spare. Come on, let’s go to my fishing spot. The eight-meter rod is already set up and ready!"
Without waiting for Shi Tian's response, Old Liu grabbed his hand and dragged him toward his fishing spot, using all his strength as if he could lift thirty pounds without any effort!
Sitting on Old Liu's fishing chair, Shi Tian was still threading the line onto the rod while Old Liu had already adjusted the float nearly perfectly. Once he finished threading the line, Shi Tian stared blankly at the two lumps of fish bait on the hook. This service was exceptional!
"Cast it! The water here is just that deep; it's set according to my earlier rod adjustments—can't go wrong!" Old Liu urged when he saw Shi Tian in a daze.
With a cast, Old Liu's float proved accurate; it bobbed up and down without missing a beat—there was no need for further adjustments!
After anxiously waiting for four or five minutes, Old Liu finally saw some movement on the float. With a slight tremor, he patted Shi Tian's shoulder, signaling him to get ready to reel in!
After testing a couple of times, when the float dipped black, Shi Tian raised his hand to hook the fish. Old Liu had somehow appeared with a landing net at his side!
A small carp weighing about three taels was caught; it required careful handling even with the net to avoid getting snagged in the trees!
Before Shi Tian could wipe his hands, the rod had already been taken by Old Liu!
"Xiao Tian, come help me put this rod away; I'm giving it to you! Take it and have fun! There are drinks and beer in the fridge—help yourself!" After shoving the previous rod into Shi Tian's hands, Old Liu impatiently urged him to get up from the fishing chair.
Shi Tian shot a glance at Old Liu with annoyance. Great, now he felt unwelcome here; he might as well go off and play by himself!
After helping Old Liu put away the rod, Shi Tian returned inside and grabbed a drink for each of them from the fridge.
When he left earlier, there had only been half a case of water in there. Just a few hours later, it was nearly full!
It must have been those two girls' doing. But where were they now?
Upon reaching the fishing platform and distributing drinks to everyone, Shi Tian took out a three-meter small rod from his rod case.
It wasn't that Shi Tian didn't want to fish for big fish; rather, before going after big ones, he needed to catch some little white strips for bait in the artificial lake where they kept their fish. If he went straight for big fish, Yi Laotou would surely kick him out of his apprenticeship!
Having been completely directed by Old Liu earlier, he hadn't had a chance to really experience how well his customized rod performed while fishing with these old men—it was quite lacking in enjoyment!
Finding a good spot on the bottom and hooking on a piece of worm, Shi Tian cast his line into the water. He felt subtle vibrations through the rod; before the float even stood upright, he lifted his hand and caught a little white strip that flopped up into the air!
A small fish bucket drew several disapproving glances from the old men.
"Xiao Tian, with so many big fish in Xinyue Lake, why do you always end up with those white strips? What’s your obsession with them? You really want to wipe them out completely?" Old Kong couldn't figure out why Shi Tian had such an affinity for catching white strips.
The old man had fished with Shi Tian several times before. As long as it wasn't sea fishing, Shi Tian would inevitably catch white strips as if they were sworn enemies!
"Old man, I've filled the artificial lake in my yard with water. I'm going to catch a few Bai Tiao to keep!" Shi Tian chuckled at Old Kong, then cast his line again. "Today I got a cat from someone else, so I’ll be using the Bai Tiao to feed it! I can't just stop catching Bai Tiao! The cat at home is still hungry!"
Hearing Shi Tian's words, Old Kong scoffed, "What? Your cat can recognize fish? Is it that picky that it won't eat anything but Bai Tiao?"
Old Kong's words made a lot of sense! Can cats really be that selective? Isn’t a Carp still a Carp? It didn’t seem necessary to only feed his cat Bai Tiao!
However, after thinking it over, feeding Bai Tiao still seemed like the best option! The little cat Xiao Yu was still young and needed three meals a day, with three fish each meal. If the fish were too big, the little cat wouldn't be able to finish them. He certainly couldn't leave them in the freezer for the next meal!
"Xiao Tian! You're still young; you need to have some ambition!" Yi Laotou chimed in casually as he lifted his rod and hooked another fish.
It was a crucian carp weighing over half a pound. Yi Laotou rebaited and cast his line again, continuing, "The bait for catching Carp and Bai Tiao isn't much different. The same cast can yield vastly different results; you need to know when to make sacrifices!"
Shi Tian glanced at the show-off Yi Laotou with a frown. Looking at the fish bucket containing food for his little cat, he thought it was about time to switch things up. The cat was too small and might not even eat fish! He might have to feed it cat food every day!
"Master, you’re right! I’ll switch to Chang Gan now!" After saying that, Shi Tian put away his small rod and pulled out a nine-meter Chang Gan from his rod case.
The old men were all using eight-meter rods, as the fish in the lake mostly swam within that range. They had been heavily fishing this spot for several days. His eight-meter rod had been taken over by Old Liu, and the ten-meter one was too long, so he decided to make do with the nine-meter rod.
