As Shi Tian was contemplating whether to check the surveillance footage, a van pulled up in front of the store. However, the man who got out did not head towards the shop but rather to the opposite side where Shui Laoban was, because Shui Laoban had just caught a fish!
Noticing someone approaching from behind, Shui Laoban quickly lifted the fish, and while no one was near, he deftly unhooked it and tossed it into the Fish Bucket, sealing it tightly. With the fish in the bucket, Shui Laoban pointed excitedly at it as it flopped around. In his haste to retrieve the fish, he got pricked by its spines, and that sharp pain sent him into a euphoric dance!
Seeing Shui Laoban's catch, Shi Tian quickly pulled out his phone to check the surveillance footage. He found the moment when Shui Laoban was retrieving the fish, zoomed in, and felt a pang of sympathy for him. It was a Golden Drum Eel, weighing around two pounds. Shi Tian wasn't sure about its price, but he knew that getting pricked by this fish hurt much more than being poked by a Yellowfin Snapper.
He remembered how painful it was when he got pricked by a Yellowfin Snapper; he had yelped in agony. Yet here was Shui Laoban, seemingly unfazed by the sting of the Golden Drum Eel as he danced around cradling his finger. Shi Tian couldn't help but admire him from the bottom of his heart!
Golden Drum Eels weren't particularly rare; they were relatively common in Sanya. Shui Laoban probably didn’t want him to rummage through the Fish Bucket for fear of getting pricked himself. More likely, he was worried that Shi Tian would try to snag some fish with his Fishing Rod since these fish traveled in schools. Shui Laoban and Shui Bi Zhang had been fishing all day and still hadn't finished; it seemed a whole school had arrived.
“Hey brother, how’s the fishing? I saw you catch something earlier; it looked pretty decent! How big was it?” Seeing Shui Laoban so jubilant, this man offered him a cigarette as a gesture of comfort.
But Shui Laoban had no time for smoking; he needed to find some iodine to disinfect his hand so he could continue fishing. “No bites all day! I just caught that Black Sea Bream earlier and got pricked!” He set down his Rod and turned to rummage through his van for some iodine.
“Damn it! No bites!” Guan Chang Duan muttered under his breath as he turned toward the Fishing Tackle Shop.
He hadn’t seen that last fish clearly, but it had to weigh at least two pounds; otherwise, he wouldn’t have bothered stopping to check out the commotion! “Boss, I’ll take a 2.7-meter Lure Rod. If I buy this rod, I can fish over there too, right?”
Last time Old Zhang caught a Niu Gang Mackerel, this guy had been there too; he was quite aware of the rules set by Shui Laoban!
Hearing this, Shi Tian felt puzzled. Why would someone need to buy a Fishing Rod from him just to fish on the opposite side? He hadn’t heard of such rules before! Was this something Sun Lang established? Su Xueyi definitely wouldn’t do such a thing!
Whether or not there were such rules didn’t matter much to Shi Tian; more fishermen on the opposite side would surely benefit his store in time as they would eventually come to buy his Rods. Why create unnecessary friction among them?
The right side of the Fishing Platform was designated for rock fishing; only rock fishing or front casting was allowed there. If they were doing Taiwanese Fishing, that would be fine too. The left side had ample space for lure fishing; as long as it didn’t interfere with Fishing Buddies on the Fishing Platform, they could fish freely!
After delineating their fishing zones, Shi Tian placed the Rod on the counter and added: “There’s just one rule for fishing over there: take all your trash with you when you’re done. If you leave plastic packaging or anything like that in Hai Li, you won’t be allowed to fish here anymore!”
The 2.7-meter Lure Rod came in two sections and could be easily assembled.
When Shi Tian was younger, he thought having more sections on a Fishing Rod was better because it made them easier to carry. He even went out of his way to make several short rods for that reason.
However, after running his shop for so long, not a single short rod had been sold; they just sat there gathering dust. Every time he saw them, it made him feel frustrated—maybe one day he’d just give them away as gifts!
Guan Chang Duan took the rod in hand, giving it a light swing while squinting his eyes. "The rod is sturdy, and the tip is sensitive. This rod is pretty good; it feels nice. But is it durable?"
Originally named Chang Qie Xian, he had already broken three rods since switching lines here at Shi Tian, so he decided to rename it Guan Chang Duan!
Catching fish under fifty pounds shouldn't be a problem, but anything over fifty would test his skills. If this rod can't handle it, you might as well go for the Boat Rod!
After teasing Guan Chang Duan a bit, Shi Tian turned around and placed a Sample Water Drop Reel on the counter. "Need a wheel? A good rod paired with a good reel makes for an even better feel!"
Guan Chang Duan glanced at the Wheel in Shi Tian's hand and decisively shook his head. "No, I have my own Wheel. Just wait a moment; I'll go get it!" He placed the rod on the counter and dashed toward his van. When he returned, he was holding a broken Lure Rod in two pieces.
"I caught a big one today in the South! Not only did this rod snap, but the line got cut too! And it's your line—tell me, was that fish big or not?" He proudly placed the two pieces of the rod on the counter and asked with a grin.
"Big? Your own line got cut; how could I say it wasn't?" If he claimed it wasn't big, Guan Chang Duan would surely demand compensation for a fish!
"Broken rod? Your main line is five Line, right? And it got cut? That fish must have been over a hundred pounds!" Shi Tian reluctantly played along with Guan Chang Duan but couldn't help but wonder if he had snagged something.
To be honest, catching a fish over a hundred pounds was rare; even thirty to fifty-pounders were hard to come by in rocky coastal areas. At least in domestic coastal regions, most catches were typically just a few ounces to several pounds.
It might not have been over a hundred pounds, but it couldn't have been far off!
Guan Chang Duan nodded in affirmation. "When I first hooked the fish, the pull wasn't that strong! After reeling in just a few meters of line, that fish suddenly exerted tremendous force, and the rod snapped instantly!"
Listening to Guan Chang Duan passionately recount his thrilling battle with the big fish, Shi Tian shook his head. "Even without breaking your rod or cutting your line, you wouldn't have landed that fish with your Wheel!"
