After sailing for over an hour, they found a moderately sized island. Pai Gou Ge reduced the boat's speed, while Lao Liu and Liang Zi began to cast their lines. Buckets of bait were scattered, encircling most of the small island, waiting for the fish to bite.
The density of fish around small islands is often much higher than in other areas, which is why many people enjoy fishing or dropping bait in these spots. After just three hours, Pai Gou Ge was busy reeling in a catch. Lao Liu took over the helm, while Pai Gou Ge and Liang Zi focused on bringing in the lines.
A Black Sea Bream, weighing over two pounds—what a great start! The first fish was caught, and Liang Zi chuckled with delight. "It's just a Black Sea Bream; it won't even cover the fuel costs. What's all the excitement about? Let's keep going! I have a feeling there are bigger catches up ahead!" With that, Pai Gou Ge began to reel in quickly.
He could sense there was something substantial on the line, and it was better to bring it in fast; otherwise, if a Sea Wolf got a bite or two, he'd be devastated! Sea Wolves were quite bothersome; they were like bandits that didn’t care if you caught a Sea Red Spot or a Tuna. If you encountered one and didn’t manage to keep it from taking a few bites, it would be seen as disrespectful!
Then came an Azure Grouper—not bad at all! It was of decent size! However, it wasn’t worth using the net just yet; at three to four dollars per pound, it hadn’t reached the threshold for that. He lifted the fish aboard and tossed it into the hold while Liang Zi took care of untangling the lines; he knew how to handle the fish.
A few Shi Jiu Gong were pulled in next. Pai Gou Ge extended his net and scooped up a bright golden fish! A Large Yellow Croaker! Weighing over a pound! This trip had already covered its costs! Carefully releasing the line from the Xia Shou, Pai Gou Ge gingerly removed the still-flopping Large Yellow Croaker from the hook and immediately placed it into the Living Water Tank.
Not all fish caught at sea are wild; many Large Yellow Croakers are farmed fish that escape and get caught. If they spend little time outside, they’re considered farmed; if they linger longer, then they’re wild.
Wild Large Yellow Croakers have long fins that can cover their eyes when spread out, and their tails grow significantly longer too!
After finishing with the hooks, Pai Gou Ge occasionally adjusted his net. The Sea Red Spot and Large Yellow Croaker were on his list of targets. Tuna was also on that list, but he wouldn’t find any here unless he went further south to drop bait!
Once all hooks were collected, night had already fallen completely. They sped towards Red Sand Wharf; while the catch was fresh, they could still sell it for a good price.
It was peak time at the dock; surrounding fishing boats were returning home, lining up one by one to sell their fish!
“How did today’s catch go?” As they entered the dock, familiar faces from nearby boats greeted them.
“Pretty good! I switched to new hooks and caught some valuable ones. Prices have been decent these past couple of days. I’ll drop bait again later tonight; might as well earn some extra cash!” Pai Gou Ge waved from the bow and shouted.
“New hooks? What kind?” Upon hearing about Pai Gou Ge’s new hooks, people from nearby boats perked up their ears.
A new piece of fishing gear holds significant appeal for fishermen; technology advances quickly, and fishing gear updates come just as fast. If one could get ahead by mastering a new piece of equipment early on, it could lead to substantial profits!
My classmates have developed a specialized hook for baiting that is sharper than ordinary hooks and less likely to let fish escape. This six-meter hook has caught five cucumbers and four Sea Red Spots, significantly increasing the catch rate compared to previous baiting hooks!
While boasting loudly, Pai Gou Ge maneuvered the boat into the dock. By this time, there were already people waiting at the dock; news of such good goods spread quickly, and they rushed over to grab them!
As Pai Gou Ge sold his fish, the others on different fishing boats weren't in a hurry. They stood by, watching to see just how much Pai Gou Ge had caught and whether it was truly as impressive as he claimed!
After selling his catch and settling the accounts, Pai Gou Ge didn’t rush to leave. Instead, he had Lao Liu and Liang Zi steer the boat aside while he strolled around the dock, enjoying the spectacle and waiting for other fishing boats to come in one by one to sell their fish.
“Hey, I need to replace the baiting hooks on my boat too. Could you ask your classmate to buy me two tubs of hooks?” Two fishermen who had just finished selling their fish approached Pai Gou Ge with a cigarette in hand.
“Uncle San, that’s no problem! My classmates’ baiting hooks aren’t on the market yet, so if I buy them now, I can get them at cost price. A tub of three-meter large hooks is only thirty-six Ten Dollars. How many tubs do you want?” Pai Gou Ge replied earnestly after taking the cigarette.
Thirty-six Ten Dollars for three-meter hooks—this was a carefully calculated price by Pai Gou Ge. It was comparable to low-end hooks available on the market and only ten or eight dollars more than what he could make himself. This was within an acceptable range for them. If he priced it like high-end hooks at fifty dollars a tub, no one would buy!
“Thirty-six? Are these hooks really of good quality? How about you let me try one tub first?” Uncle San asked with some hesitation upon hearing Pai Gou Ge’s quote.
He understood that you get what you pay for. At this price, he doubted he could find very good hooks. If they were ordinary hooks, it would be better for him to slowly tie his own set; at least that felt more reliable!
“This is the cost price since they haven’t been released yet. Once they hit the market, a tub of hooks will definitely not be less than fifty!” Pai Gou Ge explained.
Pointing at his fishing boat, he added, “I have two tubs on my boat; you can check their quality for yourself!”
“If you want them, just give me a call. I plan to replace all the hooks on my boat with these kinds anyway, so I’ll have him deliver them all together. This is a good opportunity; it won’t be easy to get them at this price later!”
