"Are we only going to catch big fish at night?" Shi Tianyi was taken aback by this revelation. So the last time Shi Ye and Air Force brought him here, it was just for leisure, and they never intended to fish at all! No wonder they only caught a few Xiao Yu before heading back, not even bothering to catch any Zao Kou!
"I'm going to bed now; I need to prepare for a big night!" The fish here are strong. Last time, I struggled for over half an hour just to reel in a fish that weighed nearly forty pounds! Listening to advice is wise, and Shi Tian had already made up his mind: this time, he wouldn't return without a tuna weighing over a hundred pounds!
As Shi Tian was about to head back to sleep, he was stopped directly by Oka. It was definitely not the right time to sleep now. Being out at sea was different from being at home; if he didn’t eat, he might get seasick, and that would be quite a scene!
He called Wang Ergou and the lobster back for a hearty meal. Everyone tacitly agreed not to drink alcohol. Wang Ergou and the lobster were quite formidable; within half an hour, they had already caught four fish. Although they weren’t particularly valuable, these fish would serve perfectly as bait for catching Tuna.
After finishing a beef feast, Shi Tian was ushered into the bedroom by Scallions and Ginger while he cleaned up the battlefield. The other three went to the stern to catch more Xiao Yu.
When he woke up again, it was already dark. Scallions and Ginger had returned with the boat near the drilling platform. "Let’s go eat! After dinner, we’ll start fishing!" Looking back at Shi Tianyi, Scallions and Ginger reminded him as he parked the boat, grabbed his rod, and headed towards the stern.
Seeing everyone else going fishing, Shi Tian rushed into the kitchen and hastily stuffed some food into his mouth before turning back towards the stern. Just as he remembered he hadn’t brought his rod, he returned to his room to grab it. By then, everyone had already started casting their lines.
Shi Tian’s rod would definitely be fine for catching Tuna; however, if he wanted to catch one, he needed to change his fishing set. After switching out the large lead and hook, he attached a big lead weight and took a Xiao Yu from the living water tank to hook it on. He tossed the hook into the water while Scallions and Ginger shook his head disapprovingly.
"Don’t rush; you can’t catch all the fish at once. No one is competing with you!"
Returning to the cabin, he turned on the spotlight. Scallions and Ginger helped him set up his fishing rod holder and connected it to the electric reel's power supply before returning to his own fishing spot.
Looking back at everyone, Shi Tian noticed they had all set up their fishing rod holders. "Aren't you all fishermen? Don’t you want to feel the line?" He muttered under his breath but obediently placed his rod in the holder. These people were seasoned fishermen; if they were using rod holders, there must be a reason for it. He didn’t dare show off; otherwise, he would be the one regretting it.
When it came to boat fishing, he should still rely on his hands! He wasn’t sure if his hands were still in their protective period! His goal wasn’t too high; just one hundred-pound Yellowfin Tuna would satisfy him completely. If he could catch two, that would be perfect!
In contrast to Shi Tian casually hooking a Yan Zai onto his line, Er Gou and his crew were much more meticulous. They used two four-centimeter shrimp—one facing forward and one backward—hooking them on before casually tossing their hook overboard while letting out line intermittently.
After more than twenty minutes of waiting, just as Shi Tian was about to head back into the cabin to check if there were any fish on Tan Yu Yan's line, Wang Ergou suddenly yanked hard—he had hooked a fish!
Seeing Wang Ergou's stance reminded Shi Tian of when he caught that thirty-six-pound Tuna. "This fish is probably around forty pounds," Shi Tian thought with a smirk. "Good job, Dog Brother!" To spare Wang Ergou's pride, Shi Tian even added four pounds to his estimate so that Wang Ergou wouldn’t feel disappointed.
Hearing this, Wang Ergou shot him an eye roll!
"What a joke, forty pounds? Two of those would be about right! But right now, I don't have time to bicker with Shi Tian; I need to get this fish up. If the fish doesn't come up, everything is in vain!"
The Electric Reel roared as the motor whined, yet the line showed no signs of being reeled in, often dragging out a considerable length instead. With seventy to eighty meters of line already out, after hooking the fish, the Electric Reel had been cranking for over ten minutes, but the line had extended to nearly one hundred ten meters!
"I can't hold on much longer," he muttered, thinking it might be time to switch off and take a break. At this rate, it would still take another twenty minutes! He glanced at Wang Ergou and casually remarked, "Another twenty minutes with the Electric Reel? How big could this fish be? That thirty-four-pound tuna we caught on the Air Force took just over ten minutes to reel in. This one is definitely bigger, but if it takes another twenty minutes, it can't possibly be under a hundred pounds!"
That seemed unlikely; there weren't many tuna over a hundred pounds in the country. Most were in the range of thirty to eighty pounds. Once they hit a hundred pounds, it was like celebrating New Year!
Yellowfin Tuna are generally smaller than Bluefin Tuna, and with overfishing in domestic waters, many fish are caught before they can grow large. Those crazy Fishing Buddies don’t even spare tuna over ten pounds; "catch and release" isn’t in their vocabulary!
On the White Eagle side, there is a standard line set at thirty kilograms, or sixty pounds. However, they also have a minimum catch limit of eight kilograms. During tuna season, they use a quota system to control catch volumes; those Fishing Boats are only allowed to catch one fish a day, usually around three hundred pounds!
"It's nothing; I can hold on for a while longer. Just watch me tire it out!" Wang Ergou replied confidently as he adjusted the drag on his reel and began slowly reeling in.
When fishing for tuna, letting out too much line is definitely not advisable. After letting it run for two or three powerful bursts, you have to reel it back in quickly; otherwise, the chances of losing the fish increase significantly.
After another ten minutes or so, when there were still about thirty meters of line left to reel in, Scallions and Ginger stood up to head towards the cockpit. He needed to steer the boat properly; if the fish swam under the boat, the chances of losing it or breaking the rod would increase dramatically.
Using the onboard monitors to control the boat while coordinating with Wang Ergou reeling in, Lobster also stood up and grabbed a large Hook and Fish Spear. As soon as the fish showed its head above water, Lobster skillfully plunged the spear down. Together with Wang Ergou's strength, they managed to haul an eighty-plus-pound tuna aboard.
Once on deck, everyone gathered around to admire Shi Tian's first tuna catch. Shi Tian was practically drooling.
"I said it was forty pounds! Let’s weigh it and see—forty pounds at least!" he boasted before turning back to his Fishing Spot to continue casting his line.
The atmosphere on board noticeably lifted with that first catch. After securing the boat and moving the fish into the Ice Chamber and strapping it down, everyone returned to their Fishing Spot except for Wang Ergou, who was off to one side flicking ash from his cigarette.
After finishing one cigarette and baiting two more shrimp, Wang Ergou resumed casting his line.
