The Luosho River is an important tributary of the Lancang River and serves as a vital route for fish migration. Consequently, the Luosho River is one of the richest rivers in the country in terms of fish species, boasting over thirty native varieties.
In recent years, the construction of hydropower stations has inevitably had a severe impact on the fish resources in the Luosho River. Taking advantage of the current situation before the effects become apparent, I decided to do some fishing and see how many unique local species I could catch.
As I cast my line, I felt a tug and reeled in a little carp, weighing less than a pound, with large scales and red fins—a renowned Chinese Knot Fish! This species is found only in the middle and lower reaches of the Lancang River's water system, where it is relatively abundant. Catching one means it will likely end up on someone’s dinner table, so I didn’t bother adding my name to any lists.
"Hey, Brother Fei," I said, "should we take this Chinese Knot Fish back to keep? They look quite beautiful when raised."
After snapping a few photos, I turned to Li Yunfei and asked for his opinion.
Hearing this, Li Yunfei shot me an incredulous look. "You want to give your father-in-law a gift, and you bring him a stinky fish?"
"No way! We can’t take it back; it’s too cold up north. This fish would freeze to death!" I quickly made up an excuse to decline.
With Li Yunfei refusing, I casually released the fish back into the river. "If you don’t want it, let it live in the Luosho River until it grows bigger for another catch!"
I then caught a Lophius and tossed it behind me. "Go sunbathe!"
Seeing Li Yunfei reeling in fish after fish, I remained unfazed.
Catching those common mainland varieties was no fun at all. Coming all the way to Xishuangbanna without fishing for unique tropical species would be pointless!
An unfamiliar Xiao Yu came up next; I snapped a few pictures and took another selfie. Then I quickly opened my Rogue Software to check what species it was and planned to look up more information later.
Searching for details on my catch, I flipped through my fishing records. What did those three question marks mean? So even this high-end Rogue Software couldn’t identify this fish? Was it too much to ask for such software to have basic search capabilities?
Frustrated with the useless Rogue Software, I shared the photos in our group chat and turned back to fishing. They say fishermen can do anything besides fishing; let’s see if anyone in the group recognizes this Xiao Yu!
As the sun began to set, Shi Tian and Li Yunfei sat at a barbecue stall by the Lancang River. Hu Shuyi joined us as well but looked somewhat outlandish with her makeup—though not unattractive.
This outing was strongly suggested by Hu Shuyi, and Li Yunfei reluctantly agreed. It wasn’t easy to get Shi Tian to treat us; he decided to consult Shi Tian about bringing along family members.
"Xiao Tian," he remarked, "you seem off today! You haven’t caught many big fish all day!" After downing a bottle of beer, Li Yunfei couldn’t help but boast in front of Hu Shuyi.
As soon as he spoke, Hu Shuyi rolled her eyes at him.
From his perspective, Shi Tian hadn’t been fishing for big fish; his mood must be low. Was it really necessary for Li Yunfei to rub salt in Shi Tian's wounds? That seemed rather cruel!
Fishing is supposed to be about enjoyment; who really cares about catching just two fish? Just as Hu Shuyi was about to speak up to ease the tension, Shi Tian grinned while holding his phone.
Hey, check out what I caught today! Let’s see how many you recognize!
This one is the Climbing Perch. It can climb trees and survive out of water for several weeks. Impressive, right?
Next up is the Red-Finned Square Mouth. Its wild population has dwindled significantly, and it's only found in the Pu'er Basin. Once you leave Menghan, it’s gone. There are only a few hundred miles of river where you can find it in the world!
Then we have the Flowering Carp, also known as Guo Er. There aren’t many left in the wild either. If I manage to catch one, that’s enough to brag about for a long time!
After a whole day of fishing, these are the only three worth showing off. Don’t let their size fool you; they have quite the reputation. Especially the Red-Finned Square Mouth—it's nearly extinct in recent years, and I haven't seen it in the Xishuangbanna Water System for many years.
And then there’s that little fish that even Rogue Software couldn’t identify, Xiao Yu. I’ll have to look it up when I get back. It might even be a rarer species that hasn’t been named yet. If that’s the case, I could name it Xingpai Fishing Gear Fish and maybe bring some fame to my own Xingpai Fishing Gear!
But honestly, that possibility is almost nonexistent, and I doubt that name would even be accepted.
