A big cast, and the line came up empty! He slapped his thigh hard, cursing his luck. That fish must have been a decent size; otherwise, it wouldn't have taken the bait so aggressively!
He quickly re-baited and cast again, only to find the hook empty once more. What was going on? Was the hook too dull? Time for a new one!

After about ten minutes, they pulled up a carp weighing just over a pound. Shui Bi Zhang casually tossed it back into the river, making Bro next to him flinch. Here he was struggling to catch anything bigger than the hook itself, while this guy casually released a carp that could have made a nice soup with just a bit more broth!
Just as Shui Bi Zhang released his fish, Wang Ergou had some action on his line too. He bent his rod deeply; the sound of water splashing indicated that this one was no small fry.
A small carp came up, and under Bro's eager gaze, he unhooked it and let it swim back into the river. The big carp didn’t even get a chance to muster enough strength for one last desperate fight before disappearing beneath the surface.
They were turning down carp? What were these outsiders here for? To show off their skills?
He glanced at Shui Bi Zhang's float, which dipped gently before slowly sinking. He lifted his rod again, only to hear the same bending sound from his own line.
Looking at his own float, which danced wildly upon being cast, even the black float seemed to be grooving to some hip-hop beat!
Watching Shui Bi Zhang release yet another carp made Bro unable to hold back any longer. Sure, show off all you want, but doing it repeatedly was pushing it!
“Brother,” he said, “you finally catch a fish and just let it go?”
This time it was his turn to offer Shui Bi Zhang a cigarette. There was no other choice; if he could keep catching big fish like that, maybe he could score some bait in return and take home a big one himself!
As he handed over the cigarette and lit it for him, Shui Bi Zhang shook his head in exasperation and sighed. “We’re here to deal with the dace problem, but all we’re catching are carp! It’s ridiculous!”
The Huchen is known as the water tiger; if you release a few into a fish pond, it won’t take long before that pond is nearly empty.
Compared to black fish, Huchen grow faster, are larger in size, and have an incredible appetite—there are hardly any natural enemies in freshwater.
There have been records of Huchen attacking swimmers in Hunan Yiyang; a ten-kilogram Huchen can easily take down an adult if it picks the wrong target. After three rounds of struggle, that unfortunate swimmer ended up getting dragged home for a hot bath.
Huchen are an essential part of the ecosystem; however, if their population density becomes too high, it can lead to disaster. A one-year-old Huchen can eat three to four pounds of Xiao Yu in a day. But by the time they reach four years old, they’ll need thirty to forty pounds daily.
“Can you really catch carp with dace?” he scoffed. “One’s a bottom dweller and the other’s mid-water; they’re not even in the same league!”
“Dace? How about we switch fishing spots? My spot has Huchen; just days ago someone caught a sixty-kilogram Huchen there!”
In front of Shui Bi Zhang, he wouldn’t mention how that poor guy ended up breaking his rod—doing so would only diminish his credibility.
"Change the Fishing Spot? Sure! I was just tired of dealing with these Carp!" As soon as this Bro spoke, Shui Bi Zhang immediately started packing up, almost helping the Bro to gather his things and move out.
Having taken a Fishing Spot, he greeted his neighbor and returned to his own Fishing Spot to cast a couple of Baits, waiting for the next opportunity to reap from another Fishing Spot!
