As Shi Tian hooked a fish, his older brother immediately rushed over with the net.
"Wow, you really got a bite!" he exclaimed. "This fish is no small fry; it must weigh over five pounds! Are you using lures?"
Just moments ago, he had confidently declared that there were no fish in this spot, and before he could finish his sentence, Shi Tian had already caught one. The irony was almost too quick to bear!
Although his brother looked down on lures, he could tolerate them more than Western Poison. After all, lures were part of fishing and made up a significant portion of it.
"What do you mean by lures? This is a new fishing technique—using an Iso Rod with live bait has nothing to do with lures!" He adjusted the tension on the line. Given that Western Poison had already been here, it was unlikely there were any big fish left. If they didn’t take advantage of this opportunity to reel in a decent catch, it would be much harder later on.
"What kind of fish is it? Did you see?" He wasn’t in the mood to argue with Shi Tian about whether it was lure fishing or not; he just wanted to help him land the fish and see what it was. He also needed to grab his rod from the car for selecting the right gear.
The line wasn't going deep, so it probably wasn't a Carp. It wasn't darting back and forth either, ruling out Grass Carp. He had caught a glimpse when it took the bait and could confirm it wasn’t a Qiao Zui. The excitement of catching a fish made Shi Tian beam with pride over his experience.
There was no way it could be a Carp; using Bai Tiao bait wouldn’t attract those two types of fish. Although both were omnivorous, they typically only ate insects or worms in the lake and wouldn’t go for Bai Tiao.
After several rounds of struggle, his brother's patience wore thin, and finally, the rod signaled that the fish was giving up!
"A Giant Catfish!" His brother exclaimed as he scooped up a four to five-pound Giant Catfish with the net. The sound of his voice echoed in Shi Tian's ears as he turned around to see him running back to the car for more gear.
Looking at the Giant Catfish lying on the ground after removing the hook, Shi Tian couldn’t help but shake his head. Just moments ago, someone had poisoned this area, and this Giant Catfish had narrowly escaped death. But now, just a week later, it had been caught again—talk about bad luck!
"Today I’ll let you go," he said softly as he gently placed the fish back into the water. "Make sure to come back and bite my hook again after you've cleared those toxins from your system!" He felt reluctant to let it go.
He had initially planned to take it home to treat his mother-in-law, but now he thought better of it. Who knew what kind of secret poison those Westerners used? It wasn’t worth risking any residual toxins for a meal.
If it were any other fish, Shi Tian would have kept it. But Giant Catfish were different; they liked to stay in one spot and rarely roamed far. Now that he released it here, it would likely remain within a few hundred meters.
When Western Poison came to poison this area, that fish would have been right here. Surviving was lucky for it, but it must have been affected by the poison nonetheless. Shi Tian didn’t have the courage to take a toxic fish home for dinner.
With his craving satisfied for now, he decided today’s fishing session was over. Tomorrow was opening day for the Fishing Tackle Shop; he needed to meet up with Da Gui Wang and Unreliable Duo soon. The sooner they wrapped things up, the sooner he could enjoy another meal at home!
He couldn’t afford not to show up; if Kang Ziyu found an excuse to let him out again, he needed to return on time—otherwise getting out next time would be much harder.
After saying goodbye to Da Gui Wang and packing up their gear, they moved several boxes of Wo Liao into the shop. With tomorrow’s grand opening, he could finally enjoy a guilt-free day of fishing.
"Brother, we’re heading out! Want to come to my fishing spot? There are big fish there—I've cut lines twice in just an hour!" As they gathered their things, Da Gui Wang offered him a cigarette and pulled out his phone to invite him into their group chat.
Cutting lines was out of the question; however, there were still plenty of Carp around—enough for him to satisfy his cravings for now.
Holding the Iso Rod, I glanced at the spot where Shi Tian had just caught a fish. The Giant Catfish had already been reeled in, and even if it was released, it surely wouldn't bite again for the next couple of days. It seemed best to skip that fishing spot for now.
