The Watermelon Demon stared wide-eyed, clearly unaware of Jin Xiong's exploits. Jin Xiong straightened his chest and quickly deflated, as if to say nothing at all. He shrugged his shoulders in disinterest and continued working.
As dusk fell, Jin Xiong and the Watermelon Demon had managed to cultivate nearly ten acres of Barren Land, about the size of a football field. Such a large-scale project would typically require a construction team working for an entire day to complete. Yet here they were, just two watermelon demons handling it with ease.
"Did I not meet your expectations?" Jin Xiong said with satisfaction as he surveyed the freshly turned soil of the Barren Land.
The Watermelon Demon nodded eagerly. "Of course, Your Majesty! You are truly impressive; I admire you immensely."
"At least you know how to appreciate talent," Jin Xiong replied, tossing aside his hoes with a flourish. "Let’s head back to rest; we’ll continue in the morning!"
The Watermelon Demon readily agreed, nodding enthusiastically. The two demons made their way toward the wooden cabin, but after just a few steps, they spotted Chen Dayong and a few others standing by the roadside, waving in their direction.
"What do they want?" Jin Xiong asked, raising an eyebrow and speaking in a low voice.
"They're here to buy watermelons," the Watermelon Demon said as he picked up a scale and hurried over. This was a routine he had experienced many times; for some reason, Chen Dayong had taken to coming late at night to buy watermelons from their patch.
Sometimes it was Chen Xuan who handled the sales instead of the Watermelon Demon. He dashed over with the scale in hand and began picking watermelons.
Jin Xiong walked slowly behind him, hands clasped behind his back, his imposing figure moving steadily. As Chen Dayong and his group of young men noticed a massive shadow approaching, they glanced up and were instantly startled!
"Wow! This guy is huge!" one of them exclaimed. "He’s so strong! Even more so than Dwayne Johnson!"
"Are farmers nowadays all this robust?"
A few young men whispered among themselves as they watched Jin Xiong approach from a distance.
"How rude! Get back to work, all of you!" Chen Dayong scolded the few laborers he had just hired.
Jin Xiong frowned as he observed the young men in front of him, muttering quietly, "Strange, these mortals are quite young, yet their vital energy seems so weak, as if they've been drained of their life force by a fox spirit."
Confused, Jin Xiong thought there might be other demons surviving in this realm. He perked up his ears and listened intently to the young men’s conversation.
Their curiosity about Jin Xiong quickly faded. They cast a glance at Chen Dayong, who was standing off to the side smoking, and continued to grumble while moving watermelons.
As he listened, Jin Xiong's expression grew increasingly peculiar.
"Working on Saturdays for such low wages, the treatment is terrible. Working late at night—don't complain about your blessings."
The more he listened, the stranger his expression became. He wondered who this "Chen Dog" was that treated these mortals with such cruelty; the level of oppression was shocking enough to make even him, a demon king, feel a pang of sympathy.
Chen Dayong walked away satisfied after buying watermelons.
"My Lord Demon King, let’s go back and rest," Watermelon Demon suggested to Jin Xiong. At this hour, it was unlikely that Chen Xuan would return.
"No." Jin Xiong raised an eyebrow, his expression oddly serious as he muttered to himself before speaking firmly, "You go gather some torches and light them up on Barren Land. This demon king intends to work through the night."
"Work through the night?" Watermelon Demon was taken aback, staring blankly. "My Lord Demon King, why suddenly so?"
Facing Watermelon Demon's confusion, Jin Xiong maintained a stern demeanor and said solemnly, "I overheard those mortals talking just now. I never imagined their lives could be so miserable—long hours of labor, high frequency of work, and such harsh oppression that it could bring tears to my eyes."
"You say that Farm Lord treats me well; if that’s the case, I cannot fall behind myself lest I be criticized."
