I couldn't help but eat a fruit. At that moment, my mind was blank, as if it were instinctual; I just kept eating. Xu Li felt a bit intimidated by the stern expression of his father-in-law and lowered his head, bracing himself for a scolding. However, Andrei didn't reprimand him; he simply asked, "Did Anna and Eva take you there? Did you find it in a hollow of a big tree?"
Xu Li looked at Andrei in confusion. Was this fate's arrangement? He nodded, pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and told the sisters to go wash up while he sat down on the steps with Xu Li. "Four years ago around this time, Boyka was home during summer vacation playing games. Anna and Eva sneaked into the mountains and were spotted by Boyka while he was getting a drink."
Worried about the sisters encountering danger, he took an axe and followed them. Eventually, he discovered that big tree. When he returned, he told me everything that had happened. I found it strange and called Ivan and the others back.
Then I gathered Pushkin and Youan along with about fourteen or fifteen men of all ages, armed with guns and accompanied by big dogs, we ventured into the mountains. After locating that big tree, we found a fruit half-buried in the ground, roughly the size of an apple.
No matter who smelled it, it stank like something rotten. When I poked it with the barrel of my gun, I remembered Anna saying that the fruit was soft and juicy. It seemed like it wasn't ripe yet; anyway, both my daughters ate it without much thought, and I didn't pay it any more attention—who would have thought you would eat it?
Andrei didn't know what else to say; he just patted Xu Li on the shoulder. "If you feel uncomfortable at all, let me know. I'll take you to town to have a look."
"Okay, I understand, Dad." Xu Li grinned, revealing teeth stained red from the fruit juice. Andrei smiled back. "Go wash up and get ready for dinner."
"Mm."
Once he returned to the house, Andrei continued to smoke in silence. He couldn't tell if this was good or bad; his daughters had grown like this surely had something to do with that fruit because Natasha had mentioned that both girls had started their periods at nine years old. Although girls develop early, this seemed too soon.
After they started their periods, their growth was rapid; clothes bought last month no longer fit by the next month. Eventually, they had to buy adult-sized clothes. Even now, they were still slowly growing taller. If it weren't for the check-up confirming everything was normal, he would have been worried sick.
Smack smack.
The sound of Xu Li eating at the dining table seemed off; he was just focused on devouring his meal. Normally satisfied with three or four pieces of Lava bread, he polished off an entire plate while eagerly glancing at Natasha. "Auntie, is there more?"
"Yes, yes!" Natasha quickly got up to head to the kitchen and waved at Andrei as she left. The old man gave his plate of beef to Xu Li before following her into the kitchen. "Little Rabbit also ate that fruit; see what else we have at home and bring it out."
"Oh dear!" Natasha exclaimed in frustration as she hurriedly handed over some Lava bread she had baked in the morning. Andrei brought out the remaining half pot of beef to the table. Seeing Xu Li eat so heartily made Anna and Eva's appetites surge as if they were competing with him; they began eating vigorously as well.
After Natasha gave one of them a light pat on the back and shot them a glare, they immediately behaved themselves, pouting as they took small bites of beef while angrily looking at Xu Li—blaming him for everything!
Thud thud thud—full!
Xu Li finished the beef soup from the pot, wiped his mouth, and let out a satisfied burp. Andrei and Natasha watched his bulging belly, fearing it might explode at any moment. After a moment of thought, Andrei said, "You should sleep alone for the next few days. Get up early to use the outhouse; I'm worried you might clog the toilet if you go too much."
Feeling full and content, Xu Li yawned and said, "I'm a bit sleepy."
