Natasha picked up a piece of beef and tasted it, nodding her head and giving a thumbs up. The twins, however, were not just eating; during their free time, he had taught them how to use chopsticks through games. The two girls were enjoying themselves immensely, their little faces puffed up like hamsters.
They hadn’t ordered many hot dishes—just a portion of braised pork, trotters, Sweet and Sour Ribs, pepper-salted beef strips, river clams with greens, and a bowl of shredded eel soup. The roasted duck and chopped duck were counted separately, while the salted duck was considered a cold dish.
The sisters had meat sauce smeared on their cheeks as they stared in awe at the chef’s knife skills, occasionally gasping in amazement. The chef appeared to be around forty years old, and the astonished voices of the foreign guests motivated him to work even harder. After arranging the dishes beautifully, he pushed the cart forward to prepare the duck carcass for a second round.
Xu Li wrapped a portion of roasted duck for Natasha. While he was wrapping it, the sisters eagerly followed suit, stuffing pieces into their mouths and chewing happily. They stomped their feet in delight, shaking their heads in agreement: it was so delicious.
“Mmm mmm mmm, so good!”
He chuckled as he stood up and wiped their mouths with napkins. “If it’s good, eat more! How about we raise ducks when we get back?”
“Yes! I want to eat this every day!”
Eva couldn’t stop eating the roasted duck. Natasha had only eaten a few slices before stopping, letting her daughters have more. Now they were each eating for two; it couldn’t hurt to indulge a little. It was unlike her own childhood when she had potatoes every day; if she wanted meat, she relied on her husband to fish or hunt.
Even though she wasn’t eating the roasted duck, there were still other dishes on the table that she needed to enjoy without wasting anything. Soon the pepper-salted duck carcass and two desserts arrived at the table. Along with them came another plate. Xu Li glanced at the two rows of small triangular watermelon slices inside and frowned slightly. “I’ll order another plate; cut the watermelon bigger and add some green grapes.”
“Sure thing!”
After placing the plate down, the waiter went back to the kitchen. “Xiao Wang, we have a customer who wants another plate; make sure to cut the watermelon bigger and add a small bunch of grapes.”
“Got it.”
A young apprentice wearing a chef’s hat clumsily prepared the fruit: “Li Li Jie, is this okay?”
The waiter nodded and returned to the private room with the plate. “Here’s your plate, sir.”
“Just put it there.”
Xu Li turned the plate toward Mother-in-law. “We don’t have much watermelon back home; these grapes are also a type of grape—Mom, you should eat more.”
“Okay.”
Xu Li waited for Natasha to start on her watermelon before stepping out of the private room and heading to the cashier. “How much is it?”
“It’s this much in total.”
“Alright.”
He took out his wallet and handed three bills to the cashier, glancing up briefly. “And give me those two packs of cigarettes.”
As he pulled out another bill and received his change along with the cigarettes, he settled down on a chair in the lounge area, opened a pack of cigarettes, and lit one up. “Our cigarettes are still the best.”
“Wow! This young guy doesn’t look too old; he’s already smoking?”
The man who had just sat down beside him pulled out a cigarette and couldn't help but chuckle. Xu Li turned to glance at him, and the smile on the man's face instantly froze. He gave a sheepish grin and fell silent. Xu Li took a few puffs of his cigarette before getting up and returning to the private room.
Zhong Ren watched Xu Li's tall figure and couldn't help but smirk, "Wow, what does this kid eat to grow so tall?"
Back in the private room, Xu Li looked at the two empty steam baskets on the table, then glanced at the sisters leaning back in their chairs, rubbing their big bellies. He smiled and asked, "Are you full?"
