The little boy lifted his small face and politely thanked Xu Li, who playfully pinched his cheek and said, "Go ahead and eat."
Ivan went to Andrei's room, quickly grabbed a bottle of Maotai. The old man looked pained at the sight, but Ivan grinned widely as he opened it and poured a large cup for Andreev. "This is a good thing my brother-in-law brought from Huaxia. My dad wouldn't even let it out during the New Year."
Andrei rolled his eyes and stepped outside for a smoke. Meanwhile, the big girl kept staring intently at Xu Li while eating. When she caught his gaze, she immediately lowered her head and continued eating. After they finished their meal and returned to rest, Ivan finally brought Xu Li to the yard and recounted their family's ordeal.
Andreev was a former soldier who had been discharged after offending someone in higher ranks due to his bluntness. He transitioned to become a police officer in a small town. Recently, his eldest daughter had vomited during a meal, and after taking her to the hospital, they discovered she was pregnant.
This sudden turn of events ignited Andreev's fury. After finding out who was responsible, he stormed over with his baton and nearly beat the young man to death. As luck would have it, that boy was the illegitimate son of a local widow and the police chief.
His daughter was still young; how would family and friends view her now that she was pregnant so early? The consequences of his rage were severe—the boy almost died and was rushed to Saint Petersburg that night. Later, he called a friend from the army, used connections to avoid prison time, but still had to pay compensation. In the end, his daughter dropped out of school and the whole family came to seek refuge with Ivan, an old comrade.
It was truly an unspeakable situation.
After hearing this, both Andrei and Xu Li shook their heads in disbelief. They told Ivan to get some rest before heading out together to inspect the ranch. They needed to hire a veterinarian, but Andrei insisted that after raising cattle and sheep for most of his life, he could handle minor issues himself. Xu Li then dropped the idea; if there were no problems over the years, how could Small Farm have survived?
When Andreev finally got up, the dining table was already set with sliced meat sausage and lava bread, along with borscht and sour cucumbers. A pair of twins sat on the sofa playing with a child. He paused for a moment before remembering that these must be Ivan's twin sisters.
Out of politeness, he nodded at them. "Hello, I'm Andreev."
"I'm Anna."
"I'm Eva."
The sisters greeted him with innocent smiles before proudly lifting up the child. "This is my baby."
"How adorable!" he exclaimed with a grin before heading to the bathroom. A row of brand new toiletries on the sink warmed this Slavic man's heart. After washing up and having breakfast, he went outside where Natasha had just finished watering the vegetables in the greenhouse.
"Have you eaten yet?" she asked.
"I already have, Auntie."
Natasha nodded as she set down her watering can. "Let me show you your new home."
With that, she led the way as Andreev followed her through the village. After about five minutes, they arrived at an old yard that had seen better days. Two older women were weeding while Xu Li and Andrei were installing water pipes; Popov and Pushkin were rewiring.
After greeting them all, Andreev joined in the work while Natasha helped the two women with weeding. By afternoon, the yard became lively as men and women brought tools to help clean up and organize.
Andreev's wife Sasha also arrived with their children after lunch. The group worked quickly together; they transported the weeds to the ranch while sorting through old wood to keep for winter firewood for their family.
