The three brothers exchanged glances and sighed in unison, "Sigh..."
"Stop sighing and hurry up with the bubbles!"
Zhuo Ya, holding a pink balloon, twirled around them like a little horse rider from a bygone era. With a mischievous grin, she said, "Who told you not to choose? You all wanted to be stars and go to Moscow!"
As she teased them, she thought to herself, "You all don't have the best at home. If Mommy and Daddy love me, they'll give me one!"
Soon, the balloons were tied again. Knowing Little Sister's shooting skills, they each tied three or four big balloons to wooden stakes. But the little girl didn’t care about that; she squeezed her legs against the horse's belly and shouted, "Giddy up!"
The white horse neighed and charged forward. When they were still twenty meters away from the wooden stakes, it suddenly veered off and ran parallel to them. Zhuo Ya held her breath and began to aim: bang bang bang!
One balloon after another was popped by her bullets. In no time, Zhuo Ya completed a round of shooting, turned the horse around to change the magazine, and urged it to run again. Balloons burst quickly as she fired two magazines in total. Happy, she rode back to the pasture, saying, "I’m done playing; you all can take your time."
Angelina shook Eva's arm and said, "Auntie, I want to ride and shoot too."
"Sure! I'll teach you," Eva replied.
She climbed onto the Black Horse and pulled Angelina up behind her. Holding her close, she started teaching her how to control the horse and aim. To her surprise, Angelina seemed to know how to ride.
"When I was little, my grandpa took me out and taught me how to ride. Later on, my mom signed me up for riding lessons, but they were too expensive. Once I learned how to ride, I stopped going," Angelina explained softly. Eva nodded in understanding as she held her small hand and began teaching her how to aim.
Zhuo Ya led the white horse back to the stable and fed it some hay before bouncing over to Cattle Shed No. 1. She found Xu Li checking on the breeding bulls and jumped onto his back, saying cheerfully, "Hey Daddy!"
Xu Li set down the hoof he was inspecting and slowly stood up with his daughter on his back. "What are you doing here? It smells bad."
"I was shooting balloons earlier; the gunshots hurt my ears," Zhuo Ya replied while hugging his neck and swinging her legs.
"What’s so interesting about keeping me company? I have work to do," he said jokingly but couldn’t help smiling as he lifted her onto his shoulders. "I wonder how much longer my little Zhuo Ya can sit on my neck. When you grow up and meet a boy you like, you'll want him to carry you instead."
Zhuo Ya's happy expression immediately fell; she pouted angrily and rubbed her small hands against his big face. "I don’t want those boys! They’re so annoying! I don’t like them at all; I like sweet-smelling girls!"
"That's because they’re just kids like you," Xu Li replied gently.
He squatted down slowly, supporting his daughter’s back with one hand while picking up a water bucket with the other. They headed toward the storage area at the Cattle Shed entrance. After putting down Zhuo Ya and organizing some things while chatting with Valery on duty for a bit, he took Zhuo Ya with him in the car.
"What do you want for dinner tonight? Daddy will cook for you."
Zhuo Ya propped her little boots on the dashboard and shrank into her seat, not sure who she was chatting with. "As long as it's made by Daddy, I’ll love it."
Xu Li gently patted his daughter's little head and drove her back to the courtyard. As soon as they entered the house and changed their shoes, he noticed Little White struggling to chew on a beef leg bone, wagging its tail excitedly behind Da Hei.
Could Da Hei please stop teaching Little White bad habits?
He gave Da Hei a light tap on the head. Da Hei shot Xu Li a sideways glance, a low growl rumbling in his throat: "You little rascal, you've wrecked my home of over ten years. Just how much longer do I have to stay in this Boiler Room?"
