"Why don't you stay in the Boiler Room for now? I'll help you build a new place when spring comes," Xu Li suggested, glancing at Da Hei, whose fur was increasingly flecked with white. A pang of sadness welled up in her heart; given Da Hei's age, he might freeze to death outside. It was better for him to stay warm in the Boiler Room.
Noticing the fleeting sadness on Xu Li's face, Da Hei rubbed his large head against her leg, understanding that she was concerned for him. He slowly made his way back through the corridor to the Boiler Room, with Xiao Bai trotting happily behind him, carrying a beef bone in his mouth.
Xiao Hua had given birth to seven pups, and only one pure white one had already been reserved by Katyusha. Once it grew a bit bigger, she would take it over. The rest of the pups would grow up in the yard and eventually take on Da Hei's responsibilities, continuing to guard his territory.
That evening, the family gathered joyfully for dinner. Angelina had been riding horses and bears all day and had even practiced shooting with six magazines, which meant she had worked up quite an appetite.
"Auntie, let me help you wash the dishes," Angelina said as she approached Anna, rolling up her sleeves to assist with the cleanup. Anna smiled and stepped aside a bit. "Are you getting used to it here?"
"Much more interesting than my home," the little girl replied happily. "At home, it's just me and my mom at dinner. You are really good-looking, unlike my dad and brother; their faces are all hairy and ugly. They’re always busy making money. Here, everyone stays together every day—playing games, eating meals, and resting."
"That's mainly because it's a holiday and all the kids are back," Anna explained as she placed the clean dishes into the drying machine. "Usually it's just me and Eva at home, along with your Uncle Makarov. Compared to the liveliness here, I prefer having a three-person world with you and Aunt Eva."
Angelina blinked her big eyes in envy. "It seems like you and Uncle have a great relationship."
"Of course!" Anna wiped her hands and thought for a moment before opening the cellar door. She picked out a watermelon and grabbed two bunches of grapes, causing Angelina to stare in surprise. "Aren't you worried about them freezing?"
"Your Uncle spent a lot of money renovating the cellar," Anna replied as she washed the grapes and peeled them before offering them to Angelina. The little girl took a bite of the sweet and sour grapes, her eyes turning into crescent moons. "So delicious!"
Watching Angelina’s satisfied expression reminded Anna of her own past with Eva. Back then, they too had felt such contentment. Her husband had gone out of his way to ensure that she and her sister could still enjoy watermelons and grapes during winter by renovating the cellar and expanding their greenhouse.
The soil here wasn't suitable for growing watermelons or certain fruits, so her husband would spend money to establish connections to import seeds, fertilizers, soil from Huaxia, along with the necessary cultivation techniques. Whenever she thought of him sweating profusely in the greenhouse during summer days, a sweet warmth filled her heart.
"What kind of people are Auntie and Uncle?" Angelina asked as they sat in a corner of the recording studio eating fruit while Xu Li explained vocal techniques to her brothers. She turned her head to look at Anna curiously.
"Your Uncle used to be very timid and frail," Anna began thoughtfully before deciding to share more about their past with the little girl. "Actually, your Uncle was brought back by my older brother and his friends."
