Xu Weixia took out a carrot, washed it, and peeled it. "Before retiring, I should pay attention to my diet. I can't just eat anything. I have a tendency to gain weight, and if we feed her a lot of rich food, she'll just have to exercise to lose it later. What's the point?"
The two brothers didn't say much more and got busy. Xu Weihua bought vegetables that Kamila could eat, avoiding those she couldn't or should eat less of. The main dish was a Grain Bowl, accompanied by stir-fried carrots with cucumbers and shrimp, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, sautéed broccoli, and a few pieces of Wagyu beef.
Finally, he brought out a pot of chicken soup and called them to the table. Xu Weihua handed a chicken leg to Xu Weixia. "This is from my family's Liudad Chicken farm. Don't worry, it's safe to eat."
"Save one for my Angelina," she replied.
Xu Weixia, unwilling to back down, took another chicken leg and handed it to Angelina. "Eat up."
"You!" Angelina felt sweet inside but wanted to lecture her a bit. As she enjoyed the chicken leg, the other three remained silent, focusing on their meal. After finishing their bowls of chicken soup, Xu Weixia looked at her clear broth and wondered aloud, "Isn't chicken soup supposed to have some fat in it?"
"I skimmed it off," Xu Weixia replied after finishing her soup in just a few bites. "This is how my dad taught me to make it. When you have time, I'll take you back home; I guarantee you'll never want to leave."
"Really?"
Angelina had the most say about Xu Weixia's disbelief. "Of course it's true! I stayed at my uncle's house for a while, and if it weren't for the school break ending soon, I wouldn't want to come back either. Let me tell you..."
The little girl held her small bowl attentively as Angelina recounted her time on the farm, her eyes slowly revealing longing. The brothers cleared the table and after finishing their chores, they each opened a coconut for the girls and handed them straws.
Then they went out onto the balcony to look at the street view. Xu Weixia nudged her older brother playfully. "Weren't you hot and heavy with Anna before? How did that change so quickly?"
"Her family didn't approve," Xu Weihua sighed. "They're all high-achieving intellectuals, and she's an Olympic Gold Medalist. That guy has high standards and wouldn't look at someone like me—a country boy. I didn't want to make things difficult for Anna, so I just let it go."
"Just as I stepped out of her dorm area, she chased after me and confessed her feelings. I've known her for over two years now; we were chatting on our phones recently. Today she had a day off, so I took her to the amusement park, and that's when we confirmed our relationship."
"Anna's dad is really strict," Xu Weixia nodded thoughtfully before breaking into a grin. "But my Uncle Alexander always makes me happy whenever I see him."
"Nikola, can you sing me a song?" Angelina called out from the living room.
Xu Weixia immediately ran over as Angelina waved her hand. With her grown body pressing down on the little girl on the sofa, she nestled into Angelina's embrace under Kamila's bewildered gaze and started to pout playfully while shaking her shoulders. "If you sing every day, I'm going to be sick of it! Can't we skip it today?"
Angelina cupped her boyfriend's handsome face and looked at him for a moment before planting a kiss on his thin lips. "Since not many people know you yet, can you sing just for us once?"
"I'll sing."
Xu Weixia never refused his girlfriend's requests. Ever since they met, he realized he was completely under her control. He turned on the TV and connected it to his phone's music, then pulled a chair over and called Xu Weihua. The two brothers sat across from their respective girlfriends.
A clear yet slightly melancholic melody began to play. Xu Weixia slowly opened his mouth:
Tap tap tap.
