The kind lie from her mother made the little girl feel a pang in her nose. She looked out the window and softly said, "Mom, I have a boyfriend now."
"Huh?"
The woman flipping through the account book suddenly paused. "It's not April Fool's Day."
"I'm serious, Mom. He’s really nice to me. I want to bring him home for you and Dad to meet."
The girl twisted the hem of her shirt, feeling quite anxious. After a moment of silence, the woman asked, "Are you at the dorm or where?"
"I'm at his apartment."
The girl's answer made the woman's heart skip a beat. She tightened her fists and then relaxed them. "Okay, Mom will finish work early today. You should bring him home."
After hanging up the phone, she wrapped her arms around her knees and recalled the craziness of last night, causing her cheeks to flush. Just then, Xu Weihua returned with a bag in hand and saw Kamila sitting on the sofa in a daze. He smiled and asked, "What’s wrong?"
"Can you come home with me tonight? My mom wants to meet you."
He gently sat beside her and pulled her into his embrace. "How about we go over early? I can cook a special dish for your uncle and aunt."
"Really?"
Kamila looked up in surprise. He smiled and kissed her on the lips. "Of course it’s true! Let’s have breakfast first, and after we eat, we can rest a bit before heading to the mall to buy some gifts for your uncle, aunt, and your sister."
"Okay!"
The little girl was overjoyed as he picked her up effortlessly and carried her to the dining table. They chatted happily while finishing breakfast. Kamila continued to rest afterward, while Xu Weihua busied himself moving the refrigerator. Her family was actually in somewhat tight circumstances; if it weren't for the honors she had received over the past two years and some endorsements that brought in some income, life would be even harder.
After thinking for a moment, he took out his phone to call his father. "Dad?"
Xu Li, who was inspecting something in the cattle shed, raised an eyebrow. "What’s up?"
He was scared out of his wits; his troublesome younger brother was constantly testing his psychological limits. He worried that his older brother might have gotten into trouble as well—Moscow wasn’t Irkutsk; here he had connections that could resolve most issues, but Moscow… well.
"I'm going to meet Kamila's parents later. I've already taken some beef from the fridge; their family is struggling a bit. Could you send some over?"
"Just there?"
Xu Li let out a long breath. "I'll pick out a good one for you right now and send it after I finish with this batch. Also, if you have any lamb or anything else there, bring it along too. Our family doesn’t lack those things; I’ll send you more this time."
Xu Weihua scratched his head. "Dad, if you send too much over here, I won’t have space to store it."
"Are you stupid? Doesn’t Angelina’s family eat?"
Xu Li approached a robust and well-fed Wagyu, patting its back with satisfaction. "Prishko, take this big fellow away. I'll handle the slaughter myself."
After giving his instructions, he continued speaking to Xu Weihua, "Boys should be generous. When it comes to gifts, don’t be stingy, especially with your girlfriend's family. I like that girl, Kamila. Once the beef is delivered, you and your father should each take a couple of beef legs and a sheep to their home. Meanwhile, I'll catch some Liudad Chicken to hang up."
