"Let's just play with the blanks; we should put the live rounds away," Kamila said, revealing her apprehension. Xu Weixia shivered and replied, "The problem is, I’m too scared to put them back."
Angelina's eyes lit up with mischief. "Then let’s load one and fire it in a place where no one is around. How does that sound?"
Xu Weihua looked worried. "What if we hit someone?"
"How could that happen? We're still within the ranch limits! Just fire it away from the ranch; there’s only our village for miles around. Don’t worry!"
Angelina was eager not to miss the chance to fire a real round, and Xu Weixia didn’t want to return the cannonball either. What if it really went off? He wasn’t ready to die yet!
With gritted teeth, he shoved the cannonball into the barrel. Xu Weihua received a kick from Angelina. "Turn the barrel; listen to my instructions."
"Alright, alright," Xu Weihua grumbled, waving his hand dismissively. After rotating the turret halfway, Angelina had already lost her sense of direction. However, she felt confident that this shot would be fine and shouted excitedly, "Agan!"
Kamila pressed the button with pursed lips, and the entire compartment shook violently. The power was far greater than a blank round. A few Xiao Qing hurriedly crawled out of the tank to see where the cannonball landed.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the ranch, after finishing his business in the outhouse, Xu Li was adjusting his pants while holding a cigarette. Just as he stepped out of the latrine and planned to wash his hands, he heard a tremendous explosion followed by a massive tremor that shook him to his core. Then came an unknown object crashing down on him with a loud bang.
The once modest outhouse was now completely flattened into rubble.
"Hey! Village Chief! Are you okay?"
"Village Chief!" Miwofu and several women cooking nearby rushed over upon hearing the noise. Seeing Xu Li vomiting, they immediately felt relieved; as long as he was alright, that was what mattered most. It was just some mess on him—he had been through worse!
"Come on, don’t just stand there! Hurry up and wash off the Chief!"
Yisha smacked Miwofu lightly. The young man snapped back to reality and quickly grabbed the hose while the women stifled their laughter at how disheveled their chief looked.
"I wonder where that cannonball landed," Angelina mused, smacking her lips.
"No way! No way! No way!" Xu Weihua and the others shook their heads vigorously like rattling drums. At that moment, the tank was parked halfway up a small hill with its barrel pointed skyward. A few Xiao Qing crawled back into the tank and continued driving forward along the hill until they bumped into a man on horseback who informed them that Old Father was looking for them. They turned around and headed back.
"Should we check it out?"
"Yeah, what if it causes internal injuries?"
Just after taking a shower, Xu Li stepped out to find Anna and Eva anxiously surrounding him. He waved his hand dismissively with a grimace, grinning wickedly, "I'm fine! If I don't skin those two Little Rabbits today, I won't share their last name!"
Meanwhile, the unsuspecting Xiao Qing trio laughed and drove their tank back to the village. Upon seeing the grain storage door wide open, they parked the tank by the roadside and let Old Father drive it back to the warehouse. After shutting off the engine, the three of them climbed out of the tank and cheerfully made their way back to the courtyard.
"Hehehe, Big Brother, Second Brother, come here! Daddy's got something good to show you!"
Sitting on the steps at the entrance, Xu Li smoked a cigarette with his right hand hidden behind his back, beckoning the two boys with his left hand.
