What good thing is it, Daddy?
Angelina pouted and leaned forward, but Xu Weihua and Xu Weixia sensed something was off. Their two mothers were waving at them from across the living room through the large window. The brothers exchanged glances at Old Father’s forced smile and the anger simmering in his eyes, along with the right hand he had behind his back, and they knew they were in trouble!
Suddenly, the brothers turned and sprinted away. Xu Li also sprang into action to chase them, but the two daughters-in-law blocked his path. He had to take a detour, which cost him a few seconds. With long strides, he swung his whip and shouted, “You better not run, damn it! Dad, listen to our explanation!”
Xu Weixia glanced back over his shoulder to see his father brandishing the whip with bloodshot eyes, a terrifying expression that seemed ready to devour anyone in sight. The beautiful Chinese words mixed with the essence of Mao Yu made him so scared that he felt like his guts would burst. He hurriedly dashed past his older brother.
Seeing how crafty their father was, Xu Laoda gritted his teeth and ran even faster. Now, whoever fell behind would get beaten. The brothers could only compete in endurance since Old Father was still chasing after them.
“Daddy, my dear Daddy, what’s this all about?” Xu Weihua shouted as he ran. Behind him, Xu Li was just a few meters away, running fiercely without answering but cracking the whip: crack!
The sharp sound struck like a warning bell in the brothers’ hearts. Memories of when they were kids and blew up the outdoor toilet flooded back. They recalled their father looking just like this then. Thinking about the miserable days spent lying on the bed after that incident made Xu Weihua curse out loud: “You bastard! Why did you have to use live ammunition? Now we’re going to die!”
“Why didn’t you stop Angelina?”
Xu Laoda gasped for breath as he ran into the pasture and saw men riding horses returning from a distance. He immediately began to howl for help: “Uncle Valery! Uncle Andreev! Help! My dad wants to kill us! Quick!”
Andreev saw Xu Li’s expression and worried he might hurt the two boys. He quickly jumped off his horse to intercept Xu Li but was pushed back by Xu Li's strong shove. The hefty Maozi sent Andreev stumbling back several steps before he fell hard onto the thick pasture below.
Xu Li jumped onto Andreev’s horse and galloped after his older brother, whipping him across the back: crack!
“Ow!” Xu Weihua cried out in pain. The sudden jolt made him accelerate past his older brother. Xu Li struck again on Xu Laoda’s back, causing him to bend over in agony. He glanced at his younger brother who was running wildly and quickly dropped down to roll on the grass pretending to be dead.
Xu Li looked at his older brother rolling on the ground and urged his horse forward again, giving him another whip: “Run! Aren’t you fast?”
“Daddy, I’m innocent! Please don’t hit me anymore!”
Xu Weihua was in tears from the pain; there was no way his two legs could outrun four legs. He decided to give up and lay flat on the grass, gasping for breath. Xu Li jumped off the horse, grabbed his older brother by the waistband of his pants, and dragged him forward like a little piglet until they reached their panting father, tossing him onto the ground.
Xu Li took off his shirt with a flourish, spat on the ground, and began to beat both boys mercilessly. They rolled around on the ground crying for mercy but it was no use. Nearby, a dozen men watched with varied expressions on their faces; they shook their heads and clicked their tongues in dismay: “How tragic!”
By the time Anna and Eva arrived with Kamila and Angelina, other than their faces being fine, both brothers were covered in welts as they slithered like snakes on the ground. Xu Li raised his whip again for another strike on Xu Weixia’s backside, causing Xu Laoda to cover his rear end while writhing on the ground.
