"Can you handle it?" Xu Li asked with interest. Yegor scratched his head and chuckled confidently, "My grandmother is Yakut. I spent seven or eight years living at her place when I was a kid, so I know a bit about their habits. It’ll be fine!"
"Alright then." He glanced at his watch. "It's four-thirty now. Let's call the villagers and gather them at Cattle Shed No. 1. I'll cook some noodles, and after we eat, we can take a look."
The others nodded and went their separate ways. Xu Li busied himself in the cafeteria while Gennady called his son. "Wake up! Get out of bed right now and go door to door to gather the old folks. We’ve discovered wild reindeer on the ranch, and Makarov wants to catch them for domestication."
After hanging up, Ivanov kissed Nadia on the forehead, got dressed, took care of his personal hygiene, put on his boots, and headed out to explain the situation to each household.
"Let’s check the footprints first."
After breakfast, Xu Li wiped his mouth and nodded towards Gennady and Yegor. The three of them rode their horses to the open space behind Cattle Shed No. 3. Gennady pointed at the tracks in the snow. "Look, they’re quite large."
The chaotic hoofprints in the snow varied in size. Yegor stared at them for a long time before suddenly looking up at Xu Li. "Village Chief, these aren’t reindeer tracks; they belong to a moose. It looks like a female moose with her calf. I just wonder if there’s a male moose around. If there is, we can’t guarantee we’ll catch them all."
"A moose? How big are they?" Xu Li asked, somewhat puzzled.
Yegor’s expression turned serious. "If it’s a male moose, it could weigh seven or eight hundred pounds easily. Some might even grow to three meters long and weigh a ton! But that’s rare for American moose; we usually don’t encounter them here unless they’ve migrated from America."
"What should we do?" Gennady felt a bit anxious upon hearing about such large animals. "Catching these big guys might end up being dangerous!"
"We’ll call everyone around thirty years old in the village and get Alexander to bring that tranquilizer gun. I’ve raised brown bears and tigers; how could I not handle a moose?"
Xu Li lit a cigarette and took a puff. "In a few years, when I have grandchildren, I’ll take them sledding in winter with a moose pulling the sled; that would be fun!"
"Alright then." Gennady nodded. "Do we need to bring other guns?"
"Of course! What if the moose goes wild?" Xu Li rolled his eyes as the three of them returned to the cafeteria to prepare. Yegor hesitantly approached them, "Village Chief, I’ve only raised reindeer with my grandmother; I’ve never dealt with moose."
"They’re all deer; there shouldn’t be much difference," Xu Li reassured him as he patted Yegor on the shoulder. "Once we catch the moose, you can take care of it, and I’ll pay you for your work."
Yegor blinked as Xu Li left the Veterinary Office. Zhukov and a few others, under the guidance of Old Russian, were preparing to extract the drug from the tranquilizer dart.
