"Eat more, look at how thin you are," Bella said.
Anna placed a large piece of roasted meat on Bella's plate. The young girl had originally planned to finish her work at the factory back home, but since her family had moved away, she found it hard to speak up. She was constantly harassed by the local thugs at the factory who wanted her to be their girlfriend, which scared her so much that she stopped going to work altogether. Instead, she called Alexei to pick her up and brought her to the village.
Little did she know that this pretty and honest girl was stepping from one danger into another. There were a dozen young men in the village eagerly waiting for a beautiful girl to come live among them. Just two days after her arrival, she caught the eye of Kozilov, who, without any shame and with a generous spirit, decided to skip class and spend his days stealing his father's car to take the girl out to Bratsk for fun. Gradually, he won her over.
Irina, eating a venison steak, looked up just in time to see several faces pressed against the window, grinning foolishly. The warm breath fogged up the glass, adding to their eerie appearance.
"Hehehe, Uncle and Auntie," Kozilov said as he was pushed forward by a few others, rubbing his hands together. "What are you all eating?"
Xu Li's large hands creaked as he sighed deeply and went to the kitchen to prepare some roasted meat for these little rascals. The group sat obediently on the sofa while Zhukov nudged his two companions with his knee and pointed toward a shelf in the corner of the living room.
On that shelf sat a matte black small drone, next to it was something resembling a game controller. The boys exchanged glances of excitement; it was the drone they had been dreaming of.
Irina, still annoyed at being scared by them earlier, noticed their fixation on the drone. She rolled her eyes and stopped eating, walking over to grab the drone and controller. The boys' eyes were glued to the drone.
As Irina pretended to grab some paper in the west corner of the room, they all turned their heads in that direction. She wiped her mouth and headed east towards Xiong Da, causing them to turn their heads again. Their silly expressions made Irina burst into giggles.
Anna and Eva were both amused and exasperated; Bella was struggling hard not to laugh. When Xu Li came into the living room carrying a large bowl of roasted meat, he found that all the boys had slipped away—Bella and Irina were also missing.
He placed the meat on the table and asked, "Where did everyone go?"
"They all went outside to play with the drone," Anna replied as she picked up a piece of meat from the bowl and ate slowly. Xu Li's face twitched; how could they let that drone slip away?
As he suspected, while he was lounging on the sofa watching short videos with Xiao Bai in his lap that afternoon, Irina stomped into the living room with a nearly broken drone and placed it on the coffee table. "Look what happened!" she exclaimed.
Xu Li felt like he might grind his teeth down but forced a smile instead. "No worries; I’ll buy another one."
Kozilov and Zhukov were terrible; she complained that she had only played with it for two or three minutes before they snatched it away from her and Bella, running off while they chased after them for quite a while.
She angrily sat down next to Xu Li and stomped her foot in frustration. "Those guys are too mean!"
"Money is just material," he said as he rubbed Irina's head gently. He opened the DJI official website and said, "Tell me which model you like best; I’ll place an order right now. It should arrive in about a month."
Irina happily dove into his embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck, her big eyes turning into crescent moons.
