"Tonight, you should go sleep at Daria's place," Anna said as she munched on grapes. Noticing her husband looking at her, she wiped her mouth with a tissue. "Aren't they all just poor girls? They spend every New Year's Eve alone, only getting a chance to interact with you during the day."
Eva and I are almost four months pregnant now, and the babies are stable. It's tough for you to hold it in at night, and it's hard for them too. Before Eva and I had kids, you used to stay over at their place every other night. It was good for everyone.
"That won't do. I can't trust you two big pregnant women at home," Xu Li shook his head like a rattle drum, unwilling to budge. No matter how much energy he had, he needed to keep an eye on his two ancestors; he wouldn't feel at ease otherwise!
Eva thought for a moment and then got up to go to the study. She called Daria, who was just about to take a bath and change clothes. The young woman was so excited that she kept saying "mm-hmm." After hanging up, she hurriedly joined Marina to wash up and change before giggling as they headed out, stumbling their way to his house.
She instinctively tidied up the guest room and then crawled under the covers, waiting patiently until Anna and Eva started to doze off. Only then did he cover them with a blanket and head back to the guest room.
The Orthodox Church promotes monogamy, but Anna and Eva don't subscribe to that notion. Daria and the others have been with their husbands for over a year now; they have grown from teenage girls into women in their thirties, wholeheartedly helping out on the family farm.
Rather than saying they no longer believe in men, it's more accurate to say their standards have risen. They know their husbands' worth and naturally look down on other men!
They have no relatives or children to rely on; they are already pitiful enough. If they don't receive some warmth, Anna and Eva feel sorry for these young girls. Now that they're pregnant, their husbands don't even dare touch them. It's uncomfortable for all three of them to share a bed; it would be better to kick him out for some peace.
"What do you think of this car?" Xu Li asked as he patted the hood of the new Great Wall model. Ivan's eyes widened as he hugged Natasha tightly, admiring the imposing black vehicle. "Isn't it too expensive?"
"Not at all." Xu Li waved his card in front of him. "Victor gave me three hundred thousand rubles! Plus your bonus this year will easily cover it. Your wedding banquet is on me as a reward for working hard on the farm."
"I don't want his money!" Ivan shook his head vigorously. "I can save up enough myself."
"This is compensation for what he did to you; why not accept it?" Xu Li patted him on the back. "There's no need to keep holding a grudge against him. Compared to my distant relatives in Huaxia, Victor is nothing! When you were bullied as a kid, he fought off three parents by himself. If he really didn't care about you, would he have gotten into fights with others?"
That winter when we first moved here, you had a high fever and fainted. Victor threw on a coat and cried while taking you to the clinic, staying up all night in the freezing cold.
He pinched Natasha's cheek gently. "Parents aren't always good at expressing their feelings. He's a rough man; what do you expect him to say? He’s probably too embarrassed to even face you."
It was indeed wrong of him to hit you in front of so many people, but his intentions were more about protecting you. He thought that if he made it painful enough for you, I wouldn't blame you anymore; his heart was in the right place—just his method was wrong.
He patted the young man's shoulder. "You're going to be a dad soon too! In a couple of years when your child is older, you'll realize that being a parent isn't easy—especially if you're not good at expressing yourself. It will be even harder when communicating with your child. Accepting his kindness by buying this car would be a good start."
